Martha Neuner Bomar, age 97, passed away in Louisville on Easter Sunday from natural causes. Martha is survived by a sister, Tillie Oberheim of Louisville; two sons, Thomas H. Bomar, of Tiburon, CA and C. David Bomar, M.D of Bristol, CT, and their wives CJ and Judith; three granddaughters, Jacqueline, Meagan and Lindsey; three great grandchildren; a nephew, William Daniels, and niece, Carol Gallant, and Carol’s daughter, Ann and son, Sam. Martha was pre-deceased by her sister, Caroline.
Born in 1919, Martha was raised in Louisville where her father operated Nanz and Neuner Florist, later Nanz and Kraft. She attended the University of Louisville, earning both a BS and MS in chemistry. Martha was a standout student and athlete in high school and college and was president of her U of L sorority, Sigma Kappa.
After graduation, Martha married Harrell H. Bomar, also a native of Louisville and graduate of U of L Speed School in chemical engineering. Harrell’s career with Remington Arms took them to Westport CT. They moved to the Ohio River Valley downstream from Pittsburgh, PA in 1951. She was the family glue, den mother, cook, tutor, and eventually co-breadwinner with a high school science teaching career.
In 1969 they moved back to Louisville where Harrell worked as a plant manager and Martha again taught science. They lived together there for 40 years. Harrell passed away in 2009 at age 92. They both elected to be cremated and buried side-by-side in Cave Hill Cemetery.
Martha was active as president of the Crescent Hill Women’s Club. She liked to dance, play bridge, travel, paint, and garden. She knew the name of every flower and plant and was a tour guide at a nature conservancy in Pennsylvania. Martha and Harrell took many long driving trips in their various self-converted camper vans, the longest being the Alaska Highway before it was paved. They were also avid and adventurous boaters in their own boat, chartered boats, and cruise ships. Later, Martha often traveled alone to California and Connecticut to visit her extended families well into her nineties.
The family is planning a reception for her family and friends on Saturday, June 3rd, 10 am to Noon at the Arch L. Heady-Cralle Funeral Home, 2428 Frankfort Avenue, Louisville, KY 40206.
