Mary Elizabeth Swenck Mattingly

Mary Elizabeth Swenck Mattingly passed away on September 25, 2026, at Sanders Ridge Health Campus in Mount Washington, KY at the age of 97. Her long life was defined by faith, family, perseverance, service, and a love of music.

Mary was born on October 26, 1928, to Phillip and Pearl Krim Swenck. She and her brothers were orphaned in 1942, when Mary was just 14 years old. The experience profoundly shaped her life and helped develop the strength, independence, and determination that remained with her throughout her 97 years.

Mary attended Okolona High School, where she played softball and field hockey and graduated with the Class of 1946. She later met Charlie Mattingly on a motorcycle ride, beginning a love story that led to their marriage in 1948.

A devoted Christian, Mary was a faithful member of Maple Grove Baptist Church beginning in 1959. Her faith was central to her life, and she shared it generously with others. Mary was instrumental in starting the day care at Maple Grove and she continued to work there until 2023. She taught Sunday School for many years and was a devoted member of the Maple Grove choir. Singing in the choir was a meaningful expression of her faith and one of the many ways she served her church family throughout her life.

Above all, Mary treasured her family. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charlie Mattingly; her parents; her brothers, Philip Swenck, George Swenck, Jim Swenck, and Robert Swenck; and her son, Alan Mattingly.

She is survived by her children, Marlene Bryan (Ken) and Chuck Mattingly (Barbara Greenwell); her grandchildren, Bradley, Amy, Larisa, Kevin, Keeley, Wes, Tara, and Alyson; 14 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren.

Mary leaves behind a remarkable legacy spanning five generations. Her strength through hardship, devotion to her faith, love of music, commitment to serving others, and deep love for her family will continue to live on through the many lives she touched.

Visitation will be 11-2 PM Thursday, October 1, 2026, at Arch L Heady at Resthaven, 4400 Bardstown Rd, Louisville, KY 40218. A service to honor Mary will begin at 2 PM with burial to follow at Resthaven Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Maple Grove Baptist Church, 5911 East Manslick Rd, Louisville, KY 40219.
