Mary E. Metcalf

At 82 years old, our beloved mother, Mary Elizabeth Metcalf, peacefully completed a journey defined by unconditional love, boundless patience, and a quiet, steadfast strength. Mary was born on September 15, 1943 to Omer and Gladys Spivey in Louisville, Kentucky. She was a long time, devoted member of Claire Memorial Methodist Church in Irvington, Kentucky.

Though she was mother to four daughters, her heart was large enough to shelter an entire community. To family, neighbors, friends, and even strangers who only met her once, she was simply and lovingly known as "Granny." She had a rare gift for making everyone feel seen, cared for, and welcomed at her table. Whatever you needed—a listening ear, gentle advice, a warm meal, or a comforting hug—Granny was always there.

Her love was the anchor of our family through every joy and every sorrow. While we mourn her absence, we find comfort knowing she is now reunited in peace with her two precious daughters who went before her. She leaves behind her two surviving daughters, who carry forward her deep devotion, grace, and enduring spirit.

Eighty-two years of warmth, laughter, and open arms cannot be measured in time alone, but in the countless lives she touched. Granny’s legacy lives on in every kindness we extend to others, just as she always did for us.

There will never be anyone who can replace her in our hearts, and I know she holds a special place in many of yours as well.

Along with her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband of over 30 years, James Chester Metcalf; her daughters, Ruby Elizabeth Proctor and Gladys Mae Proctor Andrews; two brothers; and two sisters.

Left to cherish her memory are her daughters, Ruth Ann Carwile (James Norris) and Mary Jane Denner (Jamie); her grandchildren, Austyn "Blaze" Denner (Autumn), Kyle Young, Kayla Clemens, Alexis Norris, Tyler Keene, and Ariana Norris; her great-grandchildren, Averi Stevenson, Maddy Keller, Delayna, Dakota, John D. Keller, Aspyn Stevenson, and Everleigh Norris; her sisters, Virginia Fields and Gracie Bertoli (Guido); as well as her church family, extended family members, and friends.

Visitation will be held at Evergreen Funeral Home on Friday, September 4, 2026, from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm.

A Funeral Service will be held at the same location on Saturday September 5, 2026, beginning at 12:00 pm. Mary Metcalf will be laid to rest at Evergreen Cemetery in Louisville, Kentucky.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made in Mary's name to St. Jude Children's Hospital.
