Mary Patricia Karlen

A devoted mother, proud grandmother, faithful community member, and transformative educator, Mary Patricia Karlen lived a life defined by warmth, connection, and a joyful commitment to helping others find their voice.

Pat’s passion for teaching spanned nearly four decades, touching countless young lives across the Jefferson County Public School system. After earning her Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education from Murray State College in 1960, she began her teaching journey at Theodore Roosevelt Middle School, later sharing her gentle encouragement with young learners at Fairdale, Hazelwood, Zion UCC Kindergarten, and Audubon Elementary.

In 1983, Pat earned her official endorsement in the then new English as a Second Language (ESL) program — a milestone that would define the most vibrant chapter of her professional life. Over the next fifteen years, across classrooms at Prestonia, Kenwood, Whitney Young, and especially Brandeis Elementary, she became a guiding light for students adapting to a new language and culture. Pat didn't just teach language skills; she built welcoming, compassionate bridges for children and families navigating new beginnings. Pat frequently invited refugee children and families into her home, and arranged multiple annual trips to the Circus.

Her commitment to language education was so profound that even after her retirement in June 1998, Pat continued to volunteer at the ESL office and remained deeply connected to her fellow educators, especially enjoying the monthly gatherings of the "A-Team"—a cherished circle of retired ESL teachers.

Beyond the classroom, Pat lived her faith through action, fellowship, and song. A member of Grace Immanuel United Church of Christ (and previously a devoted member of Zion UCC for over 50 years), she poured her energy into the youth group, Volks Class, and Sunday School teaching. She also delighted in the vibrant discussions of her local book club and the simple joy of lifelong learning.

Above all, Mary Pat cherished her family. She was united in marriage with her beloved husband, Richard S. Karlen, on May 10, 1958, building a life filled with love, resilience, and deep family ties.

She is reunited in peace with her husband, Richard; her son, William S. Karlen; her daughter-in-law, Mayumi Isa Karlen; and her parents, Lola Belle and William S. Dannenfelser.

Her bright spirit lives on through her sons, John Richard (Suzanne Dale) and Robert Patrick (Hollyn Richardson); and her cherished grandchildren, Walter Chikara, Lily-Jane “Jayna” (Cole Tanner), and Iris-Josephine “Josie” all of whom brought immense pride and joy to her life. She is also survived by her honorary daughter Julie “Y” Chau (Regan Norman), and beloved cousins Sheila and Judi (Hank).

Special appreciation to Hosparus of Louisville and Home Instead for making it possible for Pat to stay at home during her final months, which was her wish. Thanks especially to Cecelia Batugo and Eilyn Legaspi, dedicated healthcare attendants, for their unflagging work and dedication to keeping Pat comfortable these last few months. Without them, her staying at home would not have been possible.

Pat has requested any donations in her name be made to the ongoing work of Hosparus of Louisville.

A memorial visitation will be held on Monday, August 3, 2026, from 10:00 AM - 2:00 PM at Arch L. Heady at Resthaven, 4400 Bardstown Road, Louisville, Kentucky, 40218. A memorial service in Mary's honor will begin at 2:00 PM at the funeral home. A committal service will follow in Resthaven Memorial Park.
