Mary A Whelan

Mary Ann Whelan, beloved wife, mother and grandmother, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family on November 22, 2024 in Louisville, Kentucky. Mary Ann was born on February 28, 1941, in New Haven, Kentucky, to the late William H. Jury and Mary Cecilia Jury.

Mary Ann attended St. Catherine High School of New Haven. She worked in the reading program at St. Athanasius grade school, worked part-time in the philosophy department at Mercy High School and was an assistant at a photography studio.

Mary Ann’s life was filled with the joy of a large and loving family. She was the cherished wife of James Melvin Whelan (Big Jim) to whom she was married to for nearly 65 years. She was the proud mother of David Whelan (April Paul), Jeff Whelan (Karen) and Diane Sousan (John). Her legacy continued through her adored grandchildren: Alison Washburn (Travis), Erin Ballard, Drew Sousan, Stephen Whelan, Kristen Compton (Tim), Nick Ballard (Kristen), Victoria Whelan, Jordan Sousan, Sarah Sousan and Jake Ballard, as well as eight great-grandchildren who brought her immense happiness.

She was a beloved sister to Margaret Wiedner (Don), Madeline Newton, Patsy Lococo (John), and Barbara Hall (Andy). She is also survived by her sisters-in-law, Pat Jury and Aggie Jury, and many nieces and nephews who will fondly remember her loving nature.

Mary Ann now joins her parents, her brothers Bobby and Fred Jury, her sister Ceci Young, and brother-in-law Harold Newton in eternal rest.

Mary Ann will be greatly missed by those who were fortunate enough to know and love her.

The family would like to thank the staff of Home Instead who cared for her with much love and compassion.

A visitation for Mary will be held Saturday, November 30, 2024 from 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM at Arch L. Heady at Resthaven, 4400 Bardstown Road, Louisville, Kentucky 40218.

The family kindly requests that donations be made to St. Jude Children’s Hospital in lieu of flowers.
