A native of Milan, TN, she lived most of her adult life in Louisville, KY. She had a 25-year career at Commonwealth Life Insurance Company in Louisville, retiring in 1987.
She was married to Howard Downs for 45 years. They lived at 4403 Emberson, in Louisville, from 1952 until Howard’s death in 1997.
She was a member of the 2nd Baptist Church of Highland Park (now Seaton Baptist).
She was a member of the Kentucky Poetry Club and the Louisville Poetry Society, and published poetry of her own and others as head of August Leaves Press.
Survivors: one brother, Thomas Proctor, of Milan, TN, niece and caregiver, Joan Jenkins, of Milan, TN, and 13 nieces and nephews living throughout the U.S.
Funeral: Evergreen Funeral Home, 4623 Preston Highway, Louisville, KY, with entombment in Evergreen Cemetery. Visitation, Monday, March 5th, noon to 4:00PM, with service to follow.
