Merle was born on December 7, 1942, at home in Gas Center, Pennsylvania, to Irene and Merle Edmiston. A proud son of rural Western Pennsylvania, Merle often fondly shared memories of attending a one-room schoolhouse near Vintondale—a formative experience that shaped his character and lifelong work ethic.
In 1973, Merle and his beloved wife, Ronnie, moved to Louisville, Kentucky, where they built a life centered on love, family, and community. Together, they raised three daughters, and Merle devoted himself fully to both his home and his career.
Merle built a successful career in real estate and became a respected member of the Louisville Board of Realtors. Through years of dedication, he became part-owner of Coldwell Banker McMahan, overseeing the Timberwood Circle and Southern Indiana offices. He was known for his integrity, leadership, and sincere care for clients and colleagues alike.
Above all else, Merle loved spending time with his family. Nothing brought him more joy than being “Grandpa” to his five grandsons—Gabriel, Nicholas, Andrew, Thomas, and Samuel—who were the light of his life and the source of immense pride.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Merle and Irene Edmiston; his brother, Jack Edmiston; and his sister, Beverly Barton.
Merle is survived by his devoted wife of 54 years, Ronnie Edmiston; his daughters, Kathleen Mitchell (Ron), Susan Hiland (Mark), and Karen Allgeier (Marc); his five cherished grandsons; and his sister, Lois Hopkins.
Visitation will be held from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 22, 2025, at Arch L. Heady & Son Funeral Home on Westport Road. An informal memorial and funeral service will follow the visitation. Merle’s body has been cremated in accordance with his wishes.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to Hosparus Health or Scouting America, Lincoln Heritage Council.
Merle will be remembered for his steady presence, warmth, deep love for his family and friends, his love for St. Patrick’s Day, spending time reading, memories made at the Jersey Shore, and the stories he shared of a life well lived. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
