Michael Lee Schuler left this world January 19th, 2023, at the age of 76. He passed away peacefully with his wife, daughter, and son by his side. Mike was born in Louisville, Kentucky, on January 3rd, 1947. He grew up in Louisville and graduated from Southern High School in 1965. Mike was a veteran of the Vietnam War. He served honorably in the Navy as an enlisted member of Seabee Mobile Construction Battalion 40. Upon returning from Vietnam, he married his love Martha in 1970. The relationship bore a daughter in 1973 and a son in 1976. Mike built the young family's first home with his own hands in what was at the time a very rural Bullitt County, Kentucky. Mike and Martha are active longtime members of the First Baptist Church in Shepherdsville, Kentucky. Mike followed in his father’s footsteps and dedicated his working life to the skilled trade of sheet metal work. As a member of the Kentucky local 110 union Mike worked with his tools for decades. He went on to work as a business representative for the local 110 and ultimately served, like his father, as the training coordinator for the local 110 Sheet Metal Workers Apprenticeship School in Louisville.
Mike reluctantly retired in 2009. His greatest joy in retirement was spending time with his four grandchildren: Emily, Alyssa, Ethan, and Hannah. He was an avid photographer and was keen to get a family photo after every get-together (although each photo usually required 4 or 5 insurance frames). He and Martha loved taking trips to the beach. Over the years they made dozens of trips to the quaint Sun ‘n Sea Cottages on Longboat Key near Sarasota, Florida. They loved it so much they rarely vacationed anywhere else. Mike's biggest unrealized dream was to own a sailboat. For most a sailboat is simply not a practical purchase when you live in Louisville. He was able to get a little taste of this dream though. He took sailing lessons at the Lighthouse Landing Marina on Kentucky Lake and received his American Sailing Association certification for keelboats and coastal cruising. Mike was also partial to sitting on the porch with the occasional cold beer on a hot summer day, watching copious amounts of football, and enjoying warm fires on a cold winter day.
Mike was preceded in death by his parents Robert and Anna and his older sister Darlene. He will be missed by his wife of 53 years Martha (McCutchen); two children, Sarah Sanders (Chris) and Joshua (Elizabeth); brother Robert Volk; sister Karen Chrisman; and his four beloved grandchildren.
Visitation will be held Thursday, January 26th, from 4 to 8 PM at Arch L. Heady Funeral Home at Resthaven, 4400 Bardstown Rd. Funeral service will be at Resthaven Friday, January 27th at 12 noon.
