Mildred Lee "Milly" Derr died peacefully in her sleep early on the morning of July 2nd, exactly one week before her 100th birthday. She was a native Louisvillian and the daughter of John and Cleo Pound. She was preceded in death by her husband Oliver “Ollie” Derr. They were married for 52 wonderful years, full of joy and laughter. They raised three daughters together in their home in Beechwood Village. Barbara Henderson resides in New Hampshire, Janet Woodward in Colorado, and Patty Holloway who lives in Midway, Kentucky. Grandchildren who live across the country include Rachel and Zachary Goins, Randy and Jack Henderson, as well as Tiffany Tufford and the late Carol Dixon. Great grandchildren are Evan and Emily Kingsfield and Connor Henderson. For the past two years Milly lived at the Forum where she continued her life-long relationship with her sister Myra.

An ardent follower of the Baptist faith, Milly belonged to three different congregations over her long life. Clifton Baptist, Beechwood Baptist, and lastly, Crescent Hill Baptist where she was a member for 35 years. She personally chose all of the music and scripture used in her funeral service, which were favorites of hers over the years.

Milly was full of fun and had the most charmingly sunny disposition. She loved to laugh and to hear others laugh, and was still joking with them until a day or two before her death. That sense of connection with others through humor never left her. Milly also loved music, and sang in various church choirs. She was quoted in her 1936 high school yearbook as aspiring to one day “Be a great organist.” Milly was also very fond of playing bridge, canasta and other games that involved fellowship with others.

Milly worked as a secretary for the Jefferson County School System for 15 years, first at Waggener and then at Ballard. She retired in 1988 to spend more time with her beloved husband Ollie.

Visitation will be held 3-5 pm Friday at Arch L. Heady-Cralle Funeral Home 2428 Frankfort Avenue, with the funeral services at 10 am Saturday in the sanctuary of Crescent Hill Baptist Church, 2800 Frankfort Ave., with burial to follow at Resthaven Memorial Park. My parents, Dixie and L.P. Howser were decades-long friends of Millie and Ollie. I worked with her at Waggoner High School while teaching T.V. English. She was a delight every day and was wonderfully efficient at her job.

When visiting my mom in the hospital, I somehow found out that Millie was in the emergency room after fracturing her hip and visited with her there. She was very upbeat even then.

What a wonderful, long life she led surrounded by family and friends.

My late parents, Nancy and Bill Mowery, were friends of Milly at Crescent Hill. They dearly loved her and enjoyed spending time with her. I remember getting to know her when visiting them. Now they can all be together again. May you enjoy sharing your memories of her as you bid her farewell.
