Jr. Was a football star when I was in Elementary school at Central Grade School in Pomeroy, OH.  I would watch for him when he would occasionally walk by the school.  I would always say "Hi Jr" knowing he didn't know me from a load of coal.  He always retuned my greeting.  May have been my first hero.

Jr and Barbara came into my life back in 1967 at the old Flaget High School. Jr and my dad were on the football coaching staff. A few years later they moved to Franklin Ky. I can remember as a kid of 10 going with my family to visit the Hawthorne's. Jr took my dad and myself fishing at Old Hickory Lake. We caught a bunch of fish that day, but what I remember most was the kindness and patience that Jr showed to that kid of 10. Now, as a man of 57, I still remember that patience and kindness. Rest in peace my friend.

Gentle GIANT... perfect words for a sweet soul.  I always enjoyed being around you guys.... Still make Jr.'s home made sphegetti sauce !!! If everyone in the world was like Jr. Hawthorne we would be living in Paradise!  Blessings

I remember when this big, handsome man first became my neighbor. The first thing I noticed was the big dimpled smile and the great sense of humor. I'm going to miss so many things about Junior.

To the family of Mr Hawthorne,  I would like to tell how much I loved having him as a teacher.  He was a great man and he will be missed.  I was in the last graduating class of TJHS. My memories of high school are wonderful because of teachers like him.  He made a great difference in many children's lives.

I am deeply saddened by the lost of my dear friend, "Hawthorne".  Smyrna Bait & Tackle Shop will never be the same without "P J".  His kindness, thoughtfulness, and caring for others made him stand out above all.  R.I.P dear friend.

Of all the people I've met during my lifetime, Junior ranks near the top.  He was a kind man and if you needed help, he would always do whatever he could to help.  Thankfully, I will have many memories to cherish for the rest of my life.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the Hawthorne family.  My husband and I have fond memories of our Driver's Ed days at TJ.   Our son had the honor of having Coach when he was at TJ Middle. He will be sadly missed.

I enjoyed working with JR for 27 years at TJ. Never knew a more kind person who was friend to all. RIP Big Guy

I just seen him not long ago at Golden Corral. I so enjoyed talking with him. He said he was going to take my daughter and his Granddaughter fishing this summer. Mr. Hawthorne was one of the best ISAP teacher's ever. I would get in trouble just to hang with him. My thoughts and prayers are with his family at this time. RIP.

Jr. you will be deeply missed. You were a man with a kind heart and soul. You really knew how to make people laugh. You will always be remembered by us here at Cunagin's Automotive.

From traveling to bowl games and just being together Jr. was always in charge. He was a great supporter of public education and especially a place we both loved,Thomas Jefferson High School.Legendary stories will always remain about his excellence on the football field ,his home and his workplace.I remember when the Board chose to close TJ. Jr was very vocal about the unfairness of closing our school. One of the superintendents asked if Jr. was that serious about caring for the school. I asked him to come to the school and see for himself. It only took about five minutes for the administrator to say enough. That is the loyalty Jr had for the causes he loved. He loved God his family UK and TJ. we loved you JR.

What an awesome teacher,friend & mentor to us all that knew him. He would make you laugh then scare the crap out of you. Lol I will remember him fondly. I'm sorry for you in your time of sorrow.

When Junior was at Meighs County Children's home, he came down from the hill to the flat yard next to Mulberry Avenue -- part of the Roy Betzing property. There, Eddie and David Boney, Jim Carpenter, James Lee, Junior, and my sister, Charlotte Murray (Rowley Slagel) played tag football. I remember how once Charlotte tackled Junior. My "shrimp-boats-acommin" sister tackled giant Junior.

"Junior" was an exceptional teacher, coach & man!!! There are many T.J. alumni who are much better drivers because of him!! LMPD thanks him!!

Mr. Hawthorne  was my  Drivers Ed. teacher and he monitored my Study Hall at Thomas Jefferson High School. He was a very imposing figure to my 5 ft. 98 lb. frame! But, I soon realized what a gentle giant he was . I made him a nervous wreck behind the wheel. However, he was always so patient and kind. I will always remember that he broke my habit of saying, " you know" in all of my conversations that I had with him. He would stop me mid sentence and say, " No, I don't know."  I still smile about that when I hear children use the word like in all of their sentences!  He was a wonderful Teacher and all of these years later, I have great memories of him. Big Bro, where do I start to tell you how I am going to miss you? I still have my memories and no one can take them away from me. I know that Mother Dad and Clarence met you after St. Peter. You will be fishing with God and feeding Heaven with your catch. I love you and please tell Mother and Dad hello for me!!

"Jr" was truly a gentle giant. He was then a man amoung boys and I am sure he was a man amoung men in his adult life.

Coach may in rest in peace! You were such a great role model for us at T.J. You taught me how to drive in drivers ed., to keep more space between your car and the center line that it was better to take a ditch than to hit some other car head on. Junior you were my friend from the first day I met you at TJ. I remember all the breakfast you ordered me to have. The fishing trips on Derby weekend most of all I remember how you took care of me,lending me your car or moving me into my apartment. I loved you so and I always will.
