Born to the late Richard W. McCabe and Caroline Kingman McCabe in Concord, Massachusetts, he attended Cambridge High and Latin School and served in the 99th Infantry Division during the Second World War, where he was wounded at the Battle of the Bulge.
Shortly after graduating from Harvard University in 1949, he moved to Louisville, KY, where he worked as a chemist until his retirement in 2001. He was an avid gardener, reader, and general hobbyist, as well as a member of Christ Methodist Church.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Joan White McCabe; his brothers, Winslow and Edward McCabe; and his sisters, Evelyn McCabe Testa and Carolyn McCabe.
He is survived by his daughters, Karen (Bill) Spears and Diane McCabe; and his grandchildren, Nathan and Katherine Spears and Victoria McCabe.
