He was born on October 5, 1934 in Memphis, Tennessee to James and Margaret McDearman. Raised in the midtown neighborhood near the Memphis Zoo, he attended Central High School and Memphis State University. He later transferred to the University of Tennessee, where he majored in engineering, lettered on the tennis team, was a member of Kappa Sigma fraternity, and met and married his wife, Sue Workman of Nashville. Upon graduation, he served as a first lieutenant and navigator in the Air Force for three years, providing the young couple the opportunity to live in Utah, California, Texas, and Mississippi. His career with the Rohm & Hass Company took them to Louisville, Kentucky, where they raised a family and he lived the remainder of his life. Bob’s main loves were his family, tennis, golf, photography, his lawn/gardening, UT football, card games, and cookies. He enjoyed the annual family beach vacation to Isle of Palms, SC; big trips to Europe, Alaska, and Hawaii; bridge club and gatherings with friends in the Brownsboro Farms neighborhood; and playing golf at Glenn Oaks Country Club, where he hit a hole in one. He assumed the role of keeper of the garbage wherever he went, which suited everyone in the family just fine. To his grandkids, he is most remembered for picking them up from school/activities and treating them with cookies for the ride home. Bob and Sue recently celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary.
Bob is survived by his wife, Sue L. Workman of Louisville, KY; four sons, David of Cincinnati, OH; Alan (wife Beth) of Louisville, KY; Brad of Baltimore, MD; Kevin (wife Beth) of Louisville, KY; and grandchildren Rob (wife Heather) McDearman; John McDearman, Ellie McDearman, Chris McDearman, Sammy Goodwin, and Seth Goodwin.
