Robert "Bob" Probus

Bob was born in Owensboro, Kentucky, to Robert and Emma Probus, and was one of four children: Bill (Ann), Janet (Johny), and Mark (Cheryl). A proud graduate of Fern Creek High School, Class of ’68, he especially looked forward to the monthly reunion lunches—simple gatherings that reflected how deeply he valued connection and the people who walked alongside him through the years.

Bob met his first wife, Gaye, in Sarasota, Florida, while attending a Christian retreat. Together they were blessed with two children, Robert and Kimberly, who remained a cherished part of Bob’s life and legacy.

Bob began his early managerial career at the Blue Boar Cafeteria, where he met Helen Markwell, his wife of 31 years. Side by side, they became a true team, running the Hikes Point Markwell’s Pic Pac. After a few years spent in Florida, Bob and Helen moved back to Louisville, where both worked with KMart Corporation.

Raised in a faith-based family, Bob remained loyal and devoted to his faith throughout his life. He was a member of Southeast Christian Church (Blankenbaker), where he served as a deacon and was also a member and mentor with the church’s Outreach Grief Group—offering steady kindness, a listening ear, and a presence that brought comfort to others.

Bob never met a stranger. With a joyful spirit and a familiar, welcoming appearance, he was often described as Santa Claus, and he genuinely enjoyed playing that part—bringing warmth and lightness to those around him in ways that will be long remembered. Many friends and family will be left to cherish his memory.

Visitation will be 12:00 pm to 2:00 pm, Friday, July 31, 2026 at Arch L. Heady at Resthaven, 4400 Bardstown Road, Louisville, KY 40218.

Funeral service will follow at 2:00 pm Friday, Arch L. Heady at Resthaven with burial to follow at Resthaven Memorial Park.

Reception to follow burial in the Eventroom at funeral home.
