

We are deeply saddened to share the passing of our mother, Shirley Burks Pickett, who peacefully departed on Wednesday, March 11, 2026. She was born on December 20, 1930, in Louisville, Kentucky, and was a resident of Louisville, Kentucky. Shirley was a remarkable woman, a force of nature with a fiery spirit. She lived life on her own terms, whether she was riding her motorcycle or driving a school bus, where she was affectionately known as “Mama Shirley” to generations of children. Her independence was evident in every aspect of her life. Beyond her adventurous spirit, Shirley had a remarkable talent for creating beauty through her handmade quilts, crochet, and cross-stitch. Her creations were a testament to her creativity and dedication. We invite family and friends to join us in celebrating the life of our beloved mother. Her life was a vibrant tapestry of love, laughter, and unforgettable moments. The celebration will be held on Thursday, March 19, 2026, from 2:00 PM to 6:00 PM at Evergreen Funeral Home. She is preceded in Death by her parents, Edwin Haynes and Leva Keith Haynes and Sarah Hazelip; first husband, Fred Burks; half brothers, Melvin and Leon Taylor; as well as many beloved family members and friends.
Left to cherish her memory are; her children, Linda Edwards (Robert), Patsy Nuttall (Bill), and Fred Burks Jr. (Sherry). She also leaves behind her beloved grandchildren. Six grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, and seven great-great-grandchildren ; half sisters, Lilian Crume and Mary Ann Chasteen, as well as many cherished family members.
