Shirley graduated from duPont Manual High School and attended Centre College and the University of Louisville graduating with a degree in accounting. In addition to extensive volunteer work for her 3 children’s activities, she worked part time as an accountant/office manager for several small businesses in the Louisville area. After retiring she volunteered as the financial secretary for Lyndon Baptist Church as well as serving on the stewardship, missions, and nominating committees. She was a member of Lyndon Baptist for over 50 years before moving to Bethlehem, PA to be closer to family.
Shirley loved to travel visiting China, Australia, Alaska, Canadian Rockies, the Serengeti, Chile, and many countries in Europe. She made it to all the continents except Antarctica. Her travel adventures included white water rafting in Wyoming, hot air ballooning in Australia, and riding in a helicopter in New Zealand.
Later in life Shirley took up several types of arts and crafts ranging from calligraphy to needlework. Among her most popular creations were special Christmas stockings for each of the grandchildren, a yarn manger set, and many Christmas ornaments. These will be treasured for many years to come.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, William Trempel, and her brother, Michael Minter.
Survivors include her 2 daughters (Cynthia Batchelder (Samuel) of Woodinville, WA and Rebecca Trempel of Reston, VA), 1 son (David Trempel (Deborah) of Bethlehem, PA), and 7 grandchildren (Rachael Batchelder, James Batchelder, Daniel Trempel, Michelle Trempel, Luke Batchelder, Bethany Trempel, and Stephen Trempel).
Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. on Monday, August 15 at Lyndon Baptist Church, 8025 New La Grange Rd, Louisville. Visitation will be on Sunday from 2-7, on August 14th at Arch L. Heady & Son at Westport Village, 7410 Westport Road. Burial at Cave Hill will be private.
