Sylvester (Bill) Buckel, age 83 passed away peacefully on April 29, 2018 at Wesley Manor healthcare center. He is preceded in death by his devoted wife of 60 years, Mary (formerly Woods). He will be missed by his sons Michael, Dennis, and Larry (Carin) Buckel; his grandchildren, Denise and James; his brother, Louis (Patricia); other family members Jackie and Deidra; and a lifetime of friends, neighbors and fellow volunteers.
He attended St. Elizabeth Catholic grade school and went on to graduate from Flaget High School in 1953. Later in life, he would receive the Flaget Spirit award for his years of volunteer service with the Flaget Alumni Association.
Bill served in the U.S. Navy and reserves for 6 years and was honorably discharged in 1960. After leaving the service he worked for 36 years at the Louisville branch of the U.S. Defense Mapping Agency, retiring in 1991. His work as a cartographer lead to many service and achievement awards for his work on the Apollo 11 moon missions and for the operation desert storm/shield.
He was a devout Catholic and did much volunteer work at his home parish of Guardian Angels which also lead to his monthly service to the St. Vincent DePaul Society.
The Family is particularly grateful for the caring and loving staff at Wesley Manor healthcare center who looked after his every need.
The Funeral Service will be held in the Dignity Memorial Chapel at Evergreen Funeral Home on Thursday May 3, 2018 at 10am. The visitation will be held at funeral home on Wednesday May 2, 2018 from 4-8pm.
Memorial Donations in Sylvester’s name may be made to Wesley Manor and to the Alzheimer’s Association.
