In 1966, she married the love of her life, Rev. J. Harold Coomer. Together they shared 45 years of marriage and ministry until his passing in 2011. Trudy faithfully served alongside her husband in the Kentucky Conference of The United Methodist Church, becoming deeply involved in every congregation they were appointed to.
She is survived by her son, Eric Coomer (Daphne); her daughter, Rev. Katrina Drew (Jonathan); grandchildren Jackson and Evan Coomer and Timothy and Connor Drew; her twin sister and lifelong best friend, Ione Parry; her brother, Clay Laughinghouse; and many beloved nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband James Harold Coomer and her brothers, Ray, Randy, and Conrad Laughinghouse.
A lifelong educator, Trudy earned degrees from Lindsey Wilson College, Kentucky Wesleyan College, and Western Kentucky University, with additional graduate studies at the University of Louisville and the University of Kentucky. During a distinguished career spanning more than forty years, she inspired thousands of students as an award-winning music educator and leader in the Kentucky Music Educators Association. Passionate about the Orff approach to music education, she believed every child should experience the joy and transformative power of music.
Trudy's faith shaped every aspect of her life. She directed church choirs, taught Sunday school, organized after-school programs, and dedicated herself to bringing the arts and the love of God to children, especially in underserved communities. One of her most cherished accomplishments was founding the Camp Loucon Youth Choir Camp, where she served as Dean for nearly forty years, mentoring generations of young people through music, fellowship, and faith.
A longtime member of Jeffersontown United Methodist Church, Trudy will be remembered for her joyful spirit, generous heart, boundless energy, and unwavering faith. She loved dogs, antiques, riding her bike around Camp Loucon, and above all, her family. Full of life, love, and laughter, she rarely slowed down and never stopped caring for others.
Her legacy lives on in the family she cherished, the students she taught, the churches she served, and the countless lives she touched through music, ministry, and love.
