Una Mae Theriot

Una Mae (Maw) Theriot, 101 (almost 102), of Louisville, KY, passed away peacefully on September 17, 2023. She was born in Raceland, LA on October 25, 1921 to the late Freddie and Louisiana Breaux. She is preceded in death by her husband of 63 years Harris (Chip) Theriot, and her brother J.P. Theriot.

After World War II, Una and Chip (a carpenter by trade), built (literally) their New Orleans house in which they raised their children, Kathy Charlet (Don) and Kent Theriot (Patti) and later helped them raise her grandchildren, Joshua Charlet (Niles), Heather Ritchie (Derrick), Jessica Legel (Thad), Kristi Lorino (Jason) and Jeremy Theriot.

Una lived in their house for over 50 years until Hurricane Katrina, in 2005, sent 9 feet of water into her home. She moved to Louisville, being here in time to share and enjoy the births of her 5 great-grandchildren, Greyson Ritchie, Chloe Charlet, Elizabeth Legel, Jack Legel and Hadley Ritchie. She had numerous nieces and nephews.

Throughout her life, Una worked from her home as a seamstress, filling clients’ requests as simple as raising a hem and as difficult as a wedding with nine bride’s maids and the bride’s gown. A real bayou girl, she was a great cook and always seemed to have a big pot of Gumbo or Jambalaya to add to the table at family gatherings. Her Lace Cookies were sooooo good.

Once in Louisville, as she wandered about on her daily walks, she became one of the most recognized and senior members of her Tuxford Village neighborhood. Most recently in her new apartment at StoryPoint in Middletown, she developed quite a following among the residents and staff.

She will be missed by all who knew her.

Funeral visitation will be on Friday, September 22, 2023 from 1:00pm – 4:00 pm with a service following at 4:00 pm at Arch L Heady & Son at Westport Village, 7410 Westport Road, Louisville KY 40222. Burial will be at Lake Lawn Park in New Orleans, Louisiana.
