Verla F Gates

Verla Flannery Gates, beloved mother and grandmother, passed away July 19, 2020. She was 85 years old. Verla was a retired RN who cared for babies and their mothers at Methodist Evangelical Hospital and then Norton Hospital. She found much joy in caring for her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and (as a nurse) newborn babies and their mothers. She was a long time resident of Jefferson County. She joined with church families at Saint Stephen Lutheran Church, Fern Creek United Methodist Church, Epworth United Methodist Church, and Westport Rd., Church of Christ. She was an active member of the Gideons Auxiliary Louisville Southwest camp.

In addition to her parents, her sister, and two brothers, she was preceded in death by husbands Paul R. Flannery (20 years) and Frank T. Gates (30 years) as well as step-daughter Laura Palmore. She is survived by her children Dr. Anthony Flannery (Robin), Paula McGuffey (Allan), and Martin Flannery; step-daughters Brenda Poston (Robert) and Karen Smith (Benjamin); step-son-in-law Al Palmore; 13 grandchildren, and 14 great grandchildren.

Visitation will be 9-11 AM Saturday, July 25, 2020 at Arch L Heady at Resthaven Funeral Home 4400 Bardstown Rd Louisville, KY 40218. Funeral services will be private, however Facebook Live will be used for services. Guests may go to Arch L Heady at Resthaven- Resthaven Memorial Park on Facebook to view the service.

Per the new guidelines from the Governor: masks are required for all guests. Please know that we are allowing 25 people in a room at a time, so we are asking that everyone filter in and out.
