Walter Evans Bess

June 25, 1922November 2, 2012

Walter E. Bess, 90, passed away November 2, 2012, at Baptist Hospital Northeast in LaGrange, KY. Born and raised in Louisville in Butchertown and on "The Point", he and his wife Shirley were residents of Westport, KY for many years; they loved the river and their neighbors. "The good times" with Walt involved fishing, family, friends, tall tales, good food and drink. He will be remembered for his gentle spirit and sense of fun; his humor was a gift to his family and caregivers until the very end.

Walt was an Air Force veteran of World War II, a lifetime member of V.F.W. post 1170, and a Kentucky Colonel. He retired as warehouse supervisor from Peterson Electric Supply Co.

He is preceded in death by his wife of 69 years, Shirley Williams Bess, mother Mamie Etta Morrison Bess, father Walter E. Bess, and brothers Charles M. Bess and J. D. Bess.

He is survived by daughter Deborah E. Goldberg, brother Kenneth W. Bess and many nieces, nephews and their families.

Visitation will be held 4-8 pm Monday, at Arch L. Heady-Cralle Funeral Home, 2428 Frankfort Avenue. A service to celebrate Walter’s life will be held at 10 am Tuesday in the Chapel of the Last Supper Mausoleum at Resthaven Memorial Park, 4400 Bardstown Rd.

There was surely sadness since the death of Shirley in May, yet we were glad to have him to ourselves for awhile and to rediscover the treasure that is uncle Walter. As most of you know, his leading lady of 69 years had most of the lines in their "play"! Bushel and a Peck...Karen

A kind word, a quiet smile and an unexpected joke--Uncle Walter had it all.

No matter how busy he was, Mr. Bess would always take a moment to say hello with a warm and caring smile and for that simple reason I am saddened by his passing.

Walter will be greatly missed, we were lucky enough to have shared his and Shirly's 50th wedding anniversary. Many rocking chair memories as "Pop" would always say. All the good times of working with him at Peterson for many, many years! Thad & Madilynn Carroll

We are so sorry to hear of Pop's passing. He was a really great guy. We never did find him a Cat's Eye Marble like the one he lost as a kid in the flood! Please know our thoughts and prayers are with the whole Bess family. Keith & Samantha
