She was born in July of 1928 in Lexington, Kentucky to Leon and Geneva Prewitt. Zella graduated from Lafayette High School in Lexington in June of 1946. After that, she worked at the Lexington Lamp Works working on the light bulb assembly line. She married James E. Johnson of Pine Ridge, Kentucky in June of 1957 who preceded her in death in 1996. She was also preceded in death by two sisters, Joyce Bridges and Helen McDaniel, as well as two brothers, C.W Prewitt and Leroy Prewitt.
After their marriage, they moved to Louisville, Kentucky where they attended Fairview Christian Church. Zella worked for several years at Paritz Big Girl Fashions at Bashford Manor Mall. She also worked as a volunteer for SEAM (Southeast Associated Ministries). While at SEAM for 20 years she served as both a board member and volunteer.
She was an active member at both Fairview Christian Church, until it’s closing, and Beargrass Christian Church. She served as treasurer, elder and circle leader between the 2 churches. Her favorite book of the Bible is Proverbs, consistent with her general nature of practicality.
Zella is survived by her sister, Jennie Hall of The Plains, OH, her son and his wife Gary & Nancy Johnson of London, KY, 3 grandchildren, Matthew Johnson and wife Kaelin, Andrew Johnson and wife Rachael, both of London, KY and Ginger Johnson of Denver, Co, and 3 great-grandchildren, Adaline Johnson, Zachariah Johnson and Chase Johnson, all of London, KY.
Visitation and funeral services will be at Arch L. Ready at Resthaven Funeral Home, 4400 Bardstown Road, Louisville, KY 40218 (502-491-5950). The services will be held Thursday, July 9, 2020. There will be a private family viewing time from 9-10 AM, with public visitation from 10-12, then the funeral at 12.
Burial will follow at Bluegrass Memorial Gardens on Harrodsburg Rd in Lexington. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to Community Christian Church Childrens Program in London, KY.
