After graduating from Gunnison High School, she moved to Denver to attend Parks School of Business. It was there that she met her future husband and US Army Sargent, Arpad Szallar, on a blind date. They married on July 9, 1955.
For the next 10 years Arpad and Audrey lived in Germany, Kansas, Puerto Rico, Indiana and Colorado while Arpad served in the military. During that time their three children were born. Raymond Szallar (Loretta) of Grand Junction, CO, Valerie Szallar of Two Buttes, CO, Arthur Szallar (Janice) of Johnstown, CO. When Arpad retired from the military, they moved back to Gunnison to manage the family ranch. While ranch life in Gunnison was quite challenging, Audrey found time to be involved in many activities.
She was a member of Eastern Star, the Community Church, Cowbells and a volunteer at the Gunnison Pioneer Museum. She enjoyed hiking and cross-country skiing, playing bridge and golf, was an excellent bowler competing in several tournaments and could never pass up a chance to go to a casino. In 1995 Arpad and Audrey moved to Loveland where they enjoyed the milder weather and many activities of retired life.
Audrey was a very generous, happy, and gracious person. She had a wide range of friends in every place she lived. She was always up for trying new things and traveling to many states and countries. Her happiest times were spending winter months in Arizona after retirement from the ranch. She was also ecstatic when she became a grandma. Audrey dearly loved her grandchildren and spent many hours taking care of them and entertaining them with board and card games.
She will be sadly missed by all that knew and loved her. She is survived by her 3 children, 6 grandchildren which include Brad Szallar (Sheasa) of Clinton, TN, Steve Szallar (Amy) of Grand Junction, CO, Vanessa Thompson of Walsh, CO, Cole Thompson of Walsh, CO, Cody Szallar (Taylor) of Shamrock, TX, Jamie Sykes (Chris) of Crawford, NE and 11 great grandchildren. She is also survived by her many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Arpad Szallar, her parents and sisters, Phyllis Guerrieri and Gerrie Lou Spann.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Gunnison Pioneer Museum. Service for Audrey will be announced at a later date.
