Gary Michael McCauley was born in Topeka, KS on November 13, 1957 to Gordon and Delpha McCauley. He passed away on January 29, 2022 in Ft. Collins, Co at the age of 64 after a difficult battle with a rare form of cancer.
The McCauley family moved to Wynne, AR in 1960 and it was in Wynne that Gary spent his formative years. He attended the Wynne public schools through the 9th grade. The McCauleys moved to Ness City, KS in 1973 and he graduated as the Salutatorian from Ness City High School in 1976. He attended the University of Kansas and obtained a Masters Degree in Electrical Engineering.
Gary was highly skilled in the area of computer technology and programming. He spent much of his career in the Department of Cancer Biology at Duke University, but he stepped away from intense technological work to focus on the humanities. He had a passion for counseling troubled youth, he became a fine-art nature photographer, and he was a gifted writer. His work can still be found at quietlakephoto.com. Gary was a true outdoorsman. He spent as much time as possible biking, hiking and camping.
Gary enjoyed his time as a Boy Scout, and in a profound way he embodied the twelve points of the Scout Law. A Boy Scout is to be trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean and reverent. Gary wasn’t as cheerful as he was funny, and he wasn’t obedient in a traditional way, but 10 out of 12 makes for a good friend and neighbor, and that’s what he was.
Gary is survived by his mother, Delpha McCauley of Hays, KS, his brother, Doug McCauley of Lawrence, KS, and his niece, Hannah McCauley of Ft. Collins, CO. Gary left the bulk of his estate to the Gary McCauley Memorial Fund with the Arkansas Community Foundation (arcf.og) which will fund scholarships for students from Wynne High School. Memorials may be sent to that fund.
