At about sunrise on Wednesday, March 24, 2021, the batteries finally ran out for one of the world’s Energizer© Bunnys. Helen was born in LaSalle, Colorado on June 9, 1923 to William and Katie Renke. She was number 8 of 10 children. She grew up working the beet fields and orchards of Colorado and Idaho. Her schooling ended with the 9th grade in Kersey. She married Ralph Jager on June 22, 1946 and they remained married for over 56 years until his death on September 13, 2002. Together, Helen and Ralph had three children: Kathrine, Daniel, and David. Helen also had a daughter, Shari, prior to her marriage to Ralph.
Statistics do not begin to tell Helen’s story. She was one of those quietly passionate people – never seeking recognition or the spotlight – but a warrior still. Helen was a wife, first and foremost. Then she was a mother and grandmother. She taught her family by example more than by lecture. She was competitive, yet would reach out to help others. Envy was not a part of her, instead she would praise the things family and friends were doing to anyone who would listen. She would not hesitate to race to the defense of family and friends, no matter how powerful the foe. She honored and kept her commitments. Everyone, who has known her, has at least one memory that illustrates her consistent low-key strength.
Ralph and Helen moved to Loveland in the mid-1980’s following his retirement. They joined and were involved with Galilee Baptist Church. Retirement allowed them time to share in many intense Pinochle games with Helen’s siblings and spouses. Helen joined a senior’s bowling league and built many long-term friendships. Her beautiful counted cross-stitch works are treasured by all in her family. She also managed to have fresh baked cookies, pizzelles, or banana bread always ready to share with visitors.
In August of 2018, Helen moved to Lakeview Commons Assisted Living where she thrived in their care and love. She enjoyed Wii-bowling, bingo, poker, and various word games with other residents. Hugging became her new required ritual. Again, many new friendships were built within the Lakeview “family”.
Helen leaves behind, daughters Shari Stout (Tom) of Page, Arizona and Kathrine Browne (Ron) of Loveland; sons Daniel Jager (Deb) of Nampa, Idaho and David Jager (Susan) of Broomfield, Colorado. There are four grandchildren, their spouses, and children: Dan and Tiffeny Jager, Dakota, Makenna (Loveland); Danette and Brian Senk, Bryce. Alivia (Fort Collins); Anna Jager and Kyle Jager (Broomfield). Plus, one great, great, grandchild: James, son of Dakota.
Helen quietly, without fanfare, made numerous donations to a variety of organizations. If you desire to honor her memory, donations may be made in her name to the two she focused on the most:
Food Bank for Larimer County (5706 Wright Dr., Loveland, Colorado 80538); or
St. Jude Children’s Research (1860 S. Albion St., #916, Denver, Colorado 80222).
Memorial services will be held at Allnutt’s Hunter Chapel (2100 North Lincoln, Loveland) on Tuesday, March 30 at 10am with graveside services immediately following. Viewing is possible prior to the services from 9am to 10am.
