James E. Farner passed away peacefully on October 24, 2026, at the age of 87. He was born in Iliff, Colorado on February 19, 1939, to Joe Farner and Saloma (Scheck) Farner. Proud of his Russian German heritage, Jim valued hard work and centered his life around friends and family.
Jim was feisty and ambitious from a young age. The youngest of six boys, he also found himself the antagonist of five sisters.
Growing up farming and rodeoing, he learned to work hard and hold his own. That determination served him well when, despite having only one good eye, he fought to earn the opportunity to serve in the military, as his brothers had done before him. He served in the United States Army from 1961 to 1964, spending part of that time in Germany.
On April 20, 1963, Jim married Dorothy Wood, beginning a partnership that would shape the rest of his life. Together, they built a home and a successful business, raised four children, and made countless memories filled with holiday traditions, vacations, family celebrations, and, always, good food.
Jim retired early, giving himself more time to enjoy the things he loved. He traveled, restored old tractors, and spent time perfecting recipes for his favorite foods. His German sausage became especially well known, and sharing homemade food was one of the ways he brought people together. Even in his final days, ice cream treats and donuts were always welcome.
Above all, Jim's greatest legacy was his family. He was proud of his children, Debbie (Kerry), Trudy, Jim (Sue), and Charlie (Bill), and his grandchildren, Ray, Bob (Heather), Blaine, Garrett, Zach, Benjamin (Taylor), Gabriel (Chelcie), and Josephine (Justin) and his great-grandchildren, Richard, Wyatt, Easton, McKenna, Deacon, Greyson, Hunter and Forest. He leaves behind a legacy of family, good friends, and a life well lived.
A memorial service will be held on Thursday, November 5, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Augustine Catholic Church, 178 S. 6th Avenue, Brighton, Colorado.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association in support of Dorothy and her ongoing journey with Alzheimer's disease. Although Dorothy is unable to attend the service, Jim remains a familiar and cherished part of her world every day.
