

He grew up in California with his older sister Barbara Lorene “Lori” Hartshorn where he played baseball and various other sports and graduated high school. While in California, he found his love of fishing, skiing and music, especially his love of classic rock. After graduating, he moved to New Mexico and met Benet Linette (Hopp) Bradley and her Daughter Terry Lynn Bradley in Tijeras, they married on the 17th of July, 1993 and had a son Dana Allen Hartshorn on October 18th of the same year. He worked by selling cars and relocated him and his family up to Colorado and settled in Loveland, Colorado for many years. It was here he continued his love of fishing with the various lakes the state had to offer, especially the surrounding area of Red Feather Lake where he found a particular fondness of rainbow trout. During the winters, James and his family frequent ski slopes and various other winter trips.
In 2014, James and his wife moved up to North Dakota and he worked in the oil field at Kinder Morgan. He continued to fish and camp the various lakes in North Dakota as well as the surrounding states on his time off with his family. He was also able to go to many concerts including Aerosmith with his wife and Powertrip Festival with his son.
In late July of 2024, James went into Mckenzie county hospital and was moved to Stanford hospital in Bismarck. After a short stay in Bismarck, he passed away peacefully in the early morning hours of August 1st, 2024.
James was preceded in death by his mother Barbara Jean Hartshorn.
James is survived by his wife, Benet Linette (Hopp) Hartshorn; son, Dana Allen Hartshorn; Daughter, Terry Lynn (Bradley) Retke; son in law, Matt Retke; sister, Barbara Lorene (Hartshorn) Charette; brother in law, TJ Charette; father, Dana Chris Hartshorn.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00pm on Saturday, August 31st, 2024 at Allnutt Funeral Service - Hunter Chapel, Loveland, CO with Cheri Jensen officiating.
