What Remains
There are people who leave
and take the sound of a room with them,
who close a door so softly
you don’t realize the air has changed
until you try to breathe.
You were like that.
Now the world keeps moving—
buses arrive, clocks behave,
the sun shows up as promised—
and this feels like the strangest betrayal,
that everything continues
while you do not.
I look for you in ordinary places.
In the pause before someone laughs.
In the way light settles on the floor
like it has something important to say.
In songs I didn’t know were waiting
to become yours.
Grief is not loud all the time.
Sometimes it is a quiet companion,
sitting beside me,
handing me memories one by one
as if to say,
Take this. Don’t lose it.
I remember the sound of your voice—
not just the words,
but the meaning underneath them.
The way you existed
without trying to be unforgettable,
and somehow became exactly that.
You are not here to grow older,
but you are everywhere I have been changed.
In how I speak more gently now.
In how I pause longer before leaving.
In how I understand
that love is not measured by time,
but by impact.
Some days I am strong.
Other days I miss you in waves
that knock the breath from my chest.
Both are honest.
Both are part of loving you.
I wish I could tell you
how many times your name is spoken
in quiet rooms,
how often you are still chosen
in memory, in stories,
in the way we say remember when
instead of goodbye.
If there is a place beyond this one,
I hope it is gentle with you.
I hope it knows what we lost.
I hope you know
you were never small,
never temporary,
never replaceable.
And if there is nothing beyond—
if this life was the whole story—
then know this:
you mattered enough
to leave echoes.
You mattered enough
to be carried forward
in the way we live differently now.
You are not here,
but you are not gone.
You exist in the spaces you shaped,
in the love you gave without realizing
how permanent it would become.
We will say your name.
We will remember.
We will keep going—
not because we forgot you,
but because you taught us
how precious it is
to be here at all.
