On Monday, July 31st, 2023, our cherished mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, Lois Yvonne Walter, was called home -- on her birthday. Her special 90th birthday party moved from earth to a much more glorious celebration in heaven! She was ready to meet her Savior.
Lois was born on July 31st, 1933, in Arapahoe, NE, to Frank and Florence tenBensel. She attended elementary and high school in Arapahoe and graduated in 1950. She enjoyed sports and pep rallies in high school and drove a Model T and motor scooter with a sidecar! For a short time, she was secretary to the superintendent of the school.
On January 9, 1952, Lois married Duane Walter, and to this union five children were born. They farmed and ranched south of Holbrook, NE for 25 years. During those years, Lois served as a leader in 4-H and Girl Scouts; attended Ladies Aid and card clubs. Lois loved raising her family on the farm. She had a passion for gardening and canning, and was blessed with bountiful harvests from her large garden each year. She was a devoted wife and mother; focusing on her children and all their many activities while growing up.
After retiring from farming in 1979, Lois and Duane moved to Loveland, CO. Together, they enjoyed drives in the mountains, gardening, and attending CSU women's basketball and volleyball as season ticket holders. She was an excellent seamstress and enjoyed cross-stitch, doing puzzles, and always took a long daily walk. Her walks were a special time of worship; singing hymns to her Lord. She loved following Colorado Rockies baseball and was a life-long Nebraska Huskers fan. Lois dearly loved spending time with her grandchildren; encouraging their interests and being involved in their activities.
A faithful member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Loveland for 43 years, she loved Jesus and attended many neighborhood Bible studies.
Lois enjoyed many special friendships -- she was a loyal friend, compassionate listener; patient and kind -- possessing all the fruits of the Spirit. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
She is survived by sons, Steve Walter of Loveland, Gary Walter and wife Kathy of Loveland, Rod Walter and wife Barb of Alton, IA. Daughters, Jan Hazen and husband Dave of Loveland, Judy Hartman and husband David of Longmont. Blessed with eleven grandchildren: Brian Walter, Lindsey Anderson (Luke), Grant Walter (Mollee), Ericka Stephany (Chuck), Johanna Maurer (Michelle), Jeff Hartman (Joy), Eli Hartman (Madison), Luke Hartman (Ashley), Lana Hartman, Christina Hazen, and Matthew Hazen (Alex). In addition, Lois was overjoyed with eleven great-grandchildren.
She is also survived by sister, Gladys Lawhead of Rapid City, SD, and brother Don tenBensel (Carol) of Ellaville, GA. Also, brother-in-law Paul Walter (Jonne) of Atlanta, GA.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Duane, and her parents.
A private burial has taken place. A memorial service will be held Monday, August 7th at 3:00pm at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Loveland, CO with a reception to follow.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Immanuel Lutheran Church and School. Memories and condolences can be shared here on the Allnutt website. And cards can be sent to the Allnutt Hunter Chapel at 2100 N. Lincoln Ave. Loveland, CO 80538.
