Mary was born July 04, 1946, in Indianapolis, IN to the late Herman Albert Steirs and Mary Mildred (Guy) Steirs. She was the second oldest of five children, one having preceded her in death. Mary attended Tech High School in Indianapolis, IN and soon after, at the young age of 17, married her first Husband Johnny M. Walker. She gave birth to her first son, Ron A. Walker on August 25, 1968, and became a stay-at-home mom. The marriage ended soon after.
Mary started her very first job as a CNA at Barton Nursing Home and it was there that she met her second husband, the late James E. Culver. They welcomed three children together, Jefferey W. Culver, Jason A. Culver and Jennifer M. Culver. In 1977, six months after her daughter was born, the family moved to Houston, TX and the marriage ended soon after.
Mary then found the love of her life, the late Paul W. Blackburn and they started working as First Class welders together at Richmond Tank Car Up until he decided that he wanted her at home with the kids. They lived a long life together and were married after 20 years together. He helped to raise all the kids and was a devoted husband to Mary. In December of 2017, Paul passed away.
Mary then moved to Houston to live with her daughter, Jennifer. They were able to build a much closer bond and spend quality time with each other and Mary had more time with her grandchildren and son-in-law Nathan Rodriguez. She began to alternate her time with family between Houston and Indiana, trying to enjoy her ideal weather...meaning not the cold. While in Indiana, she would spend months at a time with sisters Hattie and Linda, or brother Mark. They all had the chance to catch up on life, and share their love for one another after 40 years apart. Unfortunately, Mary was diagnosed with Hepatocellular Carcinoma, AKA liver cancer and began chemotherapy treatments soon after.
She moved to Colorado in August of 2022 to enjoy her remaining time with her son Ron and daughter-in-law Vickie Hall. She was able to establish exceptional medical care, achieve a fitness lifestyle change, as well as enjoy all of the beauty that Colorado has to offer. She drove the electric scooters when shopping, rode the Durango/Silverton rail train, and lived her best life possible until stage 4 cancer would take her from us just a short 1.5 years after the relocation.
Mary was someone who never met a stranger, she welcomed and loved everyone, and everyone seemed to love her. She was a very nurturing and loving person, with a heart of gold. She shared her life's wisdom through her example. Never one to judge or criticize others. She showed us all what it means to forgive and to love without boundaries or conditions. Mary was a genuinely good person, caring in nature, and loving to the core of her soul. She loved God and her family and friends. We are sure she now is in heaven with the other angels.
Mary leaves to cherish her loving memory her children, Ron Walker, Jason Culver and Jennifer Culver; and her seven grandchildren, Stephanie Walker, Trevor Walker, Ryan Walker, Alyssa Aldaco, Nathan Aldaco, Yazmyne Rodriguez and Alyiah Rodriguez. She also leaves behind several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Treasured memories of Mary and words of condolence for her family are welcome at www.allnuttloveland.com.
