It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Richard "Rick" Tekulve on January 3, 2026. Rick drew his final breath at home, comforted by his "two favorite girls" and guided by the light of a beautiful full moon.
A Life of Service and Dedication
Born in Cincinnati, Ohio, on June 12, 1953, Rick was a man of steadfast character and a tireless work ethic. He honorably served his country in the U.S. Navy as a Petty Officer in the boiler rooms of the USS Seattle and the USS Detroit. Following his military service, he pursued his education with characteristic discipline, earning both a Bachelor’s in Occupational Health and Safety and a Master’s in Occupational Health and Safety- Environmental Management and Health from Columbia Southern University.
A Steward of the Great Outdoors
Rick’s career was a testament to his love for the American landscape. As a heavy equipment operator for the National Park Service, he dedicated years to maintaining the rugged beauty of Rocky Mountain National Park and Glacier National Park. For Rick, plowing the iconic Going-to-the-Sun Road in Glacier was more than a job; it was a lifelong dream realized. Earlier in his career, he also served his community as a driver for Queen City Metro.
Built on Scouting Values
Rick lived by the Boy Scout Law, a foundation established in his youth when he was honored with the Order of the Arrow. This lifelong commitment to others led him to volunteer with Red Cross Disaster Relief, deploying to assist disasters including Hurricane Sandy, the Red River floods in Fargo, and the 2011 Southern tornado outbreak. He was also a dedicated member of the Colorado Mounted Rangers, always prepared to lend a hand to those in need.
An Outdoorsman’s Heart
A pillar of the local sporting community, Rick was a member of the NRA and a 23-year member of the Estes Park Gun and Archery Club. He was happiest in the open air—whether hiking, traveling, or spending time at the range. As an avid traveler, he explored 49 of the 50 United States. Those who knew him will forever miss his quirky sense of humor, his striking blue eyes, and his unwavering smile.
Family and Legacy
Rick was a man of unconditional love and quiet strength. He is survived by his wife and "very best friend", Judith Ann Tekulve, whom he married on June 24, 2006, and their beloved dog, Jasmine. Rick often said that the absolute highlight of his life was his marriage to Judy.
"It is hard to lose your very best friend. I will miss his smile, his humor, and the love he gave so freely." — Judith Ann Tekulve
