Robert completed his early education in Louisiana. As a young boy he dreamt of growing up and moving to California to start his own business. Despite the limited opportunities in the south, he never gave up his dreams and worked diligently to someday reach his goals. Before making his journey to California, he met Maggie Russell and from this relationship one son was born: Roger Whitaker.
As a young man, Robert (R.D) moved to California with his sister Ethel Bell and joined Morning Star Baptist Church in Oakland, CA. As R.D began to peruse his dream of becoming a self proprietor, it was during this time he met Willie Frank Spencer and they wed August 30th, 1947. From this union one son was born: Edgar E. Jacobs. His loving wife of 20 years preceded him in death in December 1, 1967; his son Edgar preceded him in death in December 2, 2007.
R.D owned and operated his own janitorial service for about 30 years. R.D was a sharp dresser and enjoyed the finer things in life. He loved to travel and loved to visit the casinos with his dear friend and nephew Jackson, whom he thought highly of. He also enjoyed talking on the phone and visiting with his grandson Robert, who was named after him, and his great grandchildren in the bay area and talking with his son Roger, who always shared his encouraging beliefs of religion and Christ with his dad. One of his fondest hobbies was collecting family photos and collecting post cards, rather it be birthday, Christmas, or father’s day. He would neatly organize them all. R.D retired to Clear Lake, CA where he resided for 20 years.
R.D leaves to mourn his passing, his son Roger Whitaker and daughter-in-law Gail Whitaker, grandchildren Angelia Whitaker, Erica Whitaker, Reggie Whitaker and his wife Roshanda Whitaker ,and 4 great-grand children all of Texas; his grandson Robert Daniel Jacobs II and his wife Portia Jacobs, and great-grand children Auriell, Auriyon, and Autumn Jacobs of Oakland, CA. R.D also leaves his dear nephew and friend Jackson Davis of Clear Lake, CA and nephew Roy Owens of Oakland, CA whom both took great care of R.D. His nieces Jenell Howard of Sacramento, CA and Birdia Perkins of Clear Lake, CA along with a host of other nephews, nieces, family and friends.
