

All friends & family are welcome to the graveside services planned for 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, December 28, 2010. Burial will take place at Resthaven Memorial Park followed by a memorial service at Agape United Methodist Church at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Donna Lindley, Rev. Herb Tavanner and Rev, Judy Shema Officiating. Visitation will be held on Monday, December 27, 2010 5-7 PM at Resthaven Funeral Home.
Alfred was born in Trenton, Texas on February 28, 1918 to David Connor and Effie (Crawford) Holton. He was the 4th of 11 children. His family moved to Lubbock when he was a young boy. Alfred and Mary June Walter eloped July, 6, 1940 and were happily married 67 years.
Alfred served honorably in the U.S. Navy in the Pacific Theatre during WWII on the U.S.S. Whitney from April 1942-July 1945. He and 3 of his brothers, Buster (P.O.W.), A.B., and Kenneth also served during WWII.
Starting at the age of 9, Al began caddying at the new Meadowbrook Golf Course and quickly picked up the game. He came in 2nd in the City Wide Tournament at the age 14 and won his first City Tournament at age 16. He went on to win 34 tournaments along with 6 holes in ones. While a student at Lubbock High School he broke and set all sorts of course records in this region, some of which he still holds. Though he played with many known golfers like Billy Maxwell, Byron Nelson, Lee Trevino and Sam Sneed, his all time favorite golfing buddy is Jack Trammel. Al and Jack’s friendship began at ages 9 and 11 and they remained best friends for the last 83 years.
Al was a faithful member of Asbury United Methodist Church until moving his membership to Agape. He worked as a dispatch clerk for the U.S. Postal Service until he retired and thereafter cared for Mary June who had cancer and Alzheimer’s until her death 3 years ago. He was a devoted husband and father and will be missed.
Alfred is survived by his son Richard Holton and wife Mariah of Blue, Texas, daughter Alice Bennett and husband Trip of San Diego, California, daughter Nancy Kireilis and husband Robin of Lubbock. Sisters, Connie Dean and husband James, Janelle Padgett and husband Earl, Sister-in-law Louise Holton, seven grandchildren, five great grandchildren, and the Trammel family. He is preceeded in death by his parents, brothers, Jack, Buster, A.B., Kenneth and sister, Geraldine, Doris, Maxine and Norma.
The family suggests memorial donations to Agape United Methodist Church or Hospice of Lubbock.
