Audrey was born on December 8, 1981, in Nashville, Tennessee. Her early life came with challenges, but she met them with resilience and adaptability, learning how to move forward even when things were difficult. That strength stayed with her throughout her life and shaped the way she showed up for the people she loved.
Audrey was deeply committed to her career as a licensed paramedic. Emergency medicine was not just her profession, but a core part of her identity. She served in aeromedical and EMS roles with AeroCare and UMC EMS, choosing flight and critical care work for the responsibility, precision, and skill it required. She was calm in high-stress situations, trusted her training, and valued high quality patient care above all else. Audrey took great pride in the compassion and respect for dignity she provided to her patients. No patient was a VIP because she cared for every single one of her patients the way she would her own son. This was not negotiable for her. Audrey cared deeply for her EMS coworkers and respected the bonds formed through long shifts, difficult calls, and shared trust. To her, they were more than colleagues—they were family.
Before entering emergency medicine, Audrey’s competitive spirit found an outlet in barrel racing and horseback riding during high school. Those early passions reflected her love of focus, momentum, and independence.
Audrey married Whitney Newman on July 27, 2019. Together, they built a life filled with travel, concerts, shared dark humor, figuring out how to be the best parents they could, and their two beloved cats—Elton, who behaved more like a dog than a cat, and Lucy, who proved repeatedly that the nine-lives rule is more of a guideline than a limit. Audrey especially loved traveling with Whitney and Brett, with northern California and Boston among her favorite trips. Audrey’s OCD made her the unquestioned household manager, a role she ran with precision, lists, systems, and the firm belief that there was a correct way to do things—and that she knew it.
Audrey was a devoted mother. Advocating for her son, Brett, was a pursuit she never stopped. She showed up for him with persistence, clarity, and unwavering determination.
Known for her love of colorful words, quick sarcasm, and a sharp sense of humor, Audrey also had a softer side. She loved being near the water, where she could slow down and breathe, and she had a well documented, unapologetic obsession with Christmas, embracing the season with enthusiasm, planning, and very little restraint.
Audrey was preceded in death by her beloved “Mamaw” Helen Clark, “Poppy” Thomas Clark, mother Wendy Clark and her best friend and cousin Joshua Guy.
She is survived by her wife, Whitney Newman; her son, Brett McCabe; her brother, Dylan Arthur; her father, Randy Arthur; her uncle, Martin Clark; and many nieces and nephews.
The family would like to extend their gratitude and recognition to Robert Harber and Morgen Hiner for their unwavering love, presence, and support during her last few months.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on February 8 at UMC Health & Wellness.
Audrey will be remembered for her strength, humor, and loyalty, and for the way she showed up fully for the people she loved. Her presence was steady, her love was real, and she left a lasting mark on those who knew her.
