Barbara Sue Beasley

Barbara Sue Beasley, 86, of Lubbock, Texas, passed away peacefully on September 21, 2026. Known to most simply as Sue, she was a beloved mother, Mema, family member, and friend. A Celebration of Life service will be held Tuesday, September 29, at 10:00 a.m. in the Abbey Chapel at Resthaven Funeral Home, with the Rev. James Rodgers officiating.

Sue was born October 26, 1939, to Wilma Koonce and T.A. and Elizabeth Whatley. She enjoyed a long career with the United States Postal Service, where she worked for many years before her retirement.

Her faith and family were important parts of her life. Sue loved spending time in her yard tending to her flowers, especially her irises, and she loved having her grandchildren around and keeping them as they were growing up. Of course, the grandkids also knew that Mema had a white belt nearby and wasn't afraid to threaten to use it when needed.

She was also the keeper of her family’s memories. Sue had thousands of photographs, meticulously labeled and organized, and loved putting together photo albums for her grandchildren. Every Christmas, she made sure the grandkids received a Hallmark ornament, creating a tradition that will continue to remind them of Mema for years to come.

She especially enjoyed bringing everyone together for the holidays. Her home was a place for family to gather, eat, laugh, and spend time together, and Thanksgiving would not have been complete without her dressing. Those holidays, along with the many ordinary days spent together, became some of the memories her family will carry with them for years to come.

The later years of Sue’s life were marked by her journey with Alzheimer’s disease. While the disease changed many things, it could never erase the life she lived, the family she loved, or the memories she created with those who loved her. Her family finds comfort in knowing that her struggle is over and that she is finally at peace.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Melvin Beasley; her daughter, Patty Rodgers; her brothers, Kenneth Becknal and M.A. “Sonny” Whatley; and her sisters, Shirley Hafer, Pat Phillips, and Paula McWright.

Sue is survived by her children, Kayla Shepard of Lubbock, Texas; Pam Unger of Lubbock, Texas; Shelly Myers and husband Neil of Eads, Colorado; and James “Rowdy” Rodgers of Wylie, Texas;

Penny Rodgers of Wylie, Texas; her grandchildren, Kasey Taylor, Ashley Owens, Joshua Shepard, Alicia Shepard, Joey Gray, Christopher Unger, Bethanie O’Harrow, Caed Rodgers, Baylor Rodgers, and Brooklyn Rodgers; her great-grandchildren, Konleigh, Peighton, Adelyn, Briar, Erin, Kyndal, Tripp, Emma, Kyleigh, Brock, and Cason; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Serving as pallbearers will be Caed Rodgers, Joshua Shepard, Wade Whatley, Daren Whatley, Bobby Norvell, and Zay Becknal.

She will be remembered not for the illness that marked the final chapter of her life, but for the many years that came before it—for the woman she was, the family she built, the people she loved, and the memories that will continue to be shared for generations

Visitation will be held at Resthaven Funeral Home, 5740 West 19th Street, Lubbock, TX 79407, US, on September 28, 2026, from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm.

A Funeral Service will take place at Resthaven Funeral Home 5740 West 19th Street, Lubbock, TX 79407, US, on September 29, 2026, from 10:00 am to 11:00 am, followed by a Committal Service at Resthaven Memorial Park.
