Barbara Hutchinson Knowles was a long time Lubbock resident who passed on May 20th exactly 92 years after her birth in Lanett Alabama in 1926. Barbara graduated Lanett High School in 1944 and the University of Alabama in 1947. She moved to Lubbock shortly after that and briefly taught school before meeting and marrying Tom Hutchinson in 1949. Barbara and Tom raised four boys, Tom Jr., Sig, James and Charlie. Tom Jr. and his wife DiAnn reside in Sedona AZ while Sig and wife Nancy live in Raleigh NC. James, Charlie and first husband Tom all preceded her in death.
Barbara was an accomplished bicyclist who was a cornerstone of the Lubbock Bicycle Club and rode daily for many years. Among her many accolades was finishing the Ride across America and the Ride across Texas. She dominated her age group in the Lubbock Senior Games for many years. She and Tom Sr. founded the Easter Hill Country Tour, a must do event for Texas cycling enthusiasts.
Barbara was a docent for the Texas Tech Museum, member of the Junior League and supporter of the Lubbock Symphony Orchestra.
After the death of her first husband, Tom, she met and married fellow cyclist Ruben Knowles of Houston. Ruben and Barbara rode many miles together and Ruben cared for her until her last breath.
Barbara leaves behind two grandchildren, Dr. Hank Hutchinson of Tallahassee FL and Hilary Heartisan of Prescott AZ along with five great grandchildren. Ruben still resides at Carillon Senior Care Center.
A family visitation shall be held at Resthaven Chapel on Friday, May 25, 2018, from 6-8p.m. and a memorial service will be at Carillon Neil Chapel at 1717 Norfolk Ave. at 2:00 on Saturday, May 26, 2018. A reception will follow.
