Burmah Jean Dunn

She was born January 19, 1940, in Morton, Texas. She was raised on a farm North of Bledsoe, Texas, by her hard-working parents, Walter Burton Dunn and Burmah Viola Mathis Dunn. She attended Bledsoe School and graduated from high school in 1958. She attended Texas Technological College (Texas Tech University) in Lubbock, Texas, earning a degree in Education in May of 1962.

Burmah Jean taught school for 32 years. Four years at Bledsoe, Texas, one year at Slaton ISD, and twenty-seven years in Lubbock ISD. She loved her students and especially loved teaching them to read. She spent her last years teaching Special Education students. She enjoyed running into former students around Lubbock who remembered her as their teacher. One of her favorite things to do was serve, especially children. After she retired, Jean worked tirelessly at soup kitchens, the food bank, and by providing food and clothing for children wherever she could. Burmah Jean also enjoyed genealogy. She spent many hours at the Mahon Library researching her family genealogy and helping others do the same. She loved regaling others with stories of family lore. Burmah Jean was a faithful member of First Baptist Church of Lubbock for many years and devoted much of her time to the church as well.

Burmah Jean is survived by a sister-in-law, Rowena Dunn of Levelland, Texas, five nephews, George Frye of Nacogdoches, TX, Don Frye and wife Laurie of Jefferson, CO, Kent Gunem and wife Jan of Bentonville, AR, Steve Dunn and wife Barbara of Levelland, TX, and Stacey Dunn and wife Michelle of Levelland, TX and ten great nieces and nephews and other family members.

She is preceded in death by her parents, W. B. and Burmah Dunn; her sisters, Louise Gunem, Reba Frye, and brother-in-law Forest Frye; brother Douglas Dunn; and nephews Dudley Burke and Mike Gunem.

A funeral service will be held in the Chapel at 2:00 pm on Thursday, March 5, 2026, at First Baptist Church - Lubbock, officiated by Tim Thornton. Burial will follow at the Morton Memorial Cemetery in Morton, Texas.
