Carl William Coffey was born in Clovis, New Mexico on May 5th, 1943, to Maxine and Elmer Coffey. He grew up in Clovis and moved to Lubbock in the 1960’s to become the youngest Safeway Supermarket Manager of the time. It was there that he met Mrs. Eleanor Malouf while carrying out her groceries. Shortly after, he went to work with her husband John Malouf and family for 43 years. Carl had an incredible work ethic and loved to take any opportunity to teach and share his experience with anyone who would listen. Carl loved retail and treated his customers as close friends. He was the type of person who never encountered a stranger, as his big and giving heart sparked instant connection with anyone he met. At Malouf’s he was known for always having his signature green tape measure draped around his neck and a big smile on his face.
He is survived by his wife, Karla Danner. They spent 33 wonderful years together as best friends who were always at one another’s side with support, love, and laughter. He is also survived by a multitude of loving family members whose lives he impacted forever, including his son David Coffey (Nancy), daughters Crista McCune (John), and Caran Roberts (Wayne), stepdaughter Caressa Stover (Ian), stepson Dustin Bishop, and three sister in-laws, Tretha Caddell, Jo Linda Hutchinson, and Karen Coffey. He was the very best Papa to 12 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his mom and dad, brothers Rick Coffey and Ross Coffey, and his sisters Judy Coylson and Dawn Strader. All these relationships illustrate a special picture of Carl’s life as we are all bound together through the lesson Carl taught us and the love we share for him. His strength in times of adversity inspired us all and showed us how to face life’s challenges with determination and grace. He leaves this world as an extraordinary man of joy, fulfillment, and compassion. Carl was one of those special souls who left each place he went a bit brighter than before. It is a legacy all of us would be proud to leave our loved ones and friends and will be dearly missed by all who knew him.
