Carolyn was born on October 28, 1930, in Maury City, Tennessee to Eddie Mae and Judge Wayne Thomas Poston in the family farmhouse near the end of Poston Street. A bit of a tomboy, Carolyn loved climbing trees, riding her bike and skating, but she especially enjoyed playing basketball. A 5th-generation Tennessee native, Carolyn was raised alongside her older sister Dorothy and cousins she counted as sisters who all lived nearby. Growing up, she was active with the Maury City Church of Christ until she went to college.
Carolyn pursued her education at Freed-Hardeman College before graduating from Harding College in Searcy, Arkansas, with a bachelor’s degree in education. It was during her time at Harding that she met the love of her life, Henry Kenneth Rhodes. The two married in 1952 and embarked on a journey of ministry and service together with churches in Rocky Ford, Colorado and Elida, New Mexico. In 1959, they were invited by F.W. Mattox to join Lubbock Christian College, where Ken served as Dean and professor of Bible and History while Carolyn devoted herself to homemaking and supporting the college community as an active member of the LCU Associates.
Carolyn’s passion for teaching extended well beyond her home. She taught sixth grade at Lubbock Christian School for 20 years and was beloved by students and faculty alike for her dedication and unique knack to motivate students with a "can-do", upbeat spirit. Her commitment to education was matched only by her devotion to her church family at Green Lawn Church of Christ in Lubbock. For over six decades, Carolyn and Ken served faithfully at Green Lawn. She especially enjoyed teaching cradle roll classes, Ladies Bible Class and spent many hours as a World Bible School Study Helper, sharing the good news with thousands around the globe.
Carolyn’s life was marked by an optimistic outlook and a heart for service. Her sparkle and warmth left an indelible impression on all who knew her. Whether through teaching or encouraging, she touched countless lives with her generous and unwavering spirit.
She is survived by her sons and their families, Brant and Charlotte, Kent, Kevin and Julie, and Kerry and Kris; five grandchildren Renee, Jason, Elizabeth, Ethan and Lawson, along with beloved nephews, nieces, and their extended families. Carolyn was preceded in death by her husband, Ken, of nearly 70 years, her parents and her sister.
Carolyn’s legacy is one of faithfulness and love - a life well-lived in service to others. A Memorial Service will be held on August 15, 2026, at 11:00 AM at Green Lawn Church of Christ, 5701 19th Street in Lubbock.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to Lubbock Christian School or World Bible School
