Cody Scarborough

Cody was born on November 22, 1977 in Lubbock, Texas to Tom Mitt and Scherry Scarborough. Cody graduated from Frenship High School in 1996 before enlisting in the Navy, serving five years as a Flight Engineer. He then earned a bachelor’s degree in Aeronautical Engineering from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University and returned to the Navy, graduating from Officer Candidate School in 2005. He continued his education throughout his career, completing the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College and earning his master’s degree at Webster University.

Cody loved God, his family and country. He served an honorable 26 years in the United States Navy, rising to the rank of Captain. He was a loving and devoted husband and an admirable father who cherished his family deeply. He was a man of kindness, strength and unwavering love.

He earned his Naval Aircrew Wings in 2001 and reported to the “Golden Eagles”, completing two deployments with the Fifth and Seventh Fleets. He earned his Naval Flight Officer Wings in September 2007, served as a Fleet Replacement Instructor beginning in 2011, and in 2014 served as Aircraft Launch and Recovery (V-2) Division Officer and TOPCAT. He reported as Department Head at VQ-7 in June 2016.

Captain Scarborough went on to command Fleet Air Reconnaissance Squadron (VQ) 4, the “Shadows”— a strategic deterrence squadron providing airborne communications links to the nation’s strategic forces. He then served within the Pentagon as N2N6N4 Requirements Officer and N99C TACAMO Requirements Officer before his passing.

Over his career he accumulated more than 3,900 flight hours in three aircraft. His decorations include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Joint Service Commendation Medal, Navy Commendation Medal (four awards), Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (four awards), and numerous service awards and ribbons. The City of Lubbock granted him Special Recognition for his service – a career that inspired West Texas and communities far beyond it.

Cody is survived by his wife, Jennifer Scarborough; their two children, Koen and Emily; his parents, Tom Mitt and Scherry Scarborough; and his brother, Ben (Liz) Scarborough.

Visitation will be held from 6:00 to 8:00 PM on Monday, August 17, 2026, at Lake Ridge Chapel and Memorial Designers, 6025 82nd Street, Lubbock, Texas. A celebration of life will follow at 10:00 AM on Tuesday, August 18, 2026, at the same location. Burial will be at 1:00 PM at West Texas State Veterans Cemetery, 4614 E 50th Street, Lubbock, Texas. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project.
