January 17, 1933 – August 23, 2025
Connie Wray Hopping Nicholson, 92, of Lubbock, Texas, passed away peacefully on August 23, 2025. She will be remembered for her sharp wit, fearless spirit, and dedication to her family and community.
Born January 17, 1933, in Littlefield, Texas, Connie was the daughter of Jacob Wray Hopping and Esta Mae McGuire. She attended Texas Tech University where she studied Home Economics and quickly became known for her lively personality and clever humor.
In 1952, Connie was crowned both Miss Lubbock and Miss Texas and represented the state at the Miss America Pageant in Atlantic City. While the title brought her statewide recognition, it was her personality that captured hearts. When asked about her trip East, she quipped, “I’m sold on Texas,” a line that was reprinted in newspapers across the state and became her calling card. At one reception, she hopped onto a table and led servicemen in singing The Eyes of Texas, a bold moment that reflected her courage and quick wit.
After her pageant years, Connie built a respected career in public service. She served nearly 30 years as Lubbock County Treasurer, where she earned a reputation for competence, fairness, and candor. A 1983 profile described her as “unafraid to stick to her guns,” and those who worked with her knew that her quick remarks and practical wisdom often brought clarity to difficult situations. She also dedicated many years to volunteering with the Lubbock Lions Club, giving her time generously to projects that strengthened her community
At home, Connie was the heart of her family. She was known for her clever one-liners, her practical holiday gifts, her love of cats, and her devotion to the Texas Tech Red Raiders. She brought humor and warmth into every room, making sure laughter was never far away.
Connie was preceded in death by her parents, her daughter Martha Elizabeth Williams, her sister D’Ruth Barron, and her brother Richard “Dick” Hopping.
She is survived by her son, Edward Wray Nicholson (Lisa); her son-in-law, Noel Williams; her grandchildren Michael Wray Nicholson (Erica), Meleah McKenzie Brown, Cassandra Leeann Leon (Antonio), Emily Simmons (Don), Jacob Williams (Jamie), Sarah Bristow (Zack), and Christina Williams (Chris); and 17 great-grandchildren, who adored her.
Services will be held on Friday, August 29, 2025, at Resthaven Funeral Home in Lubbock. Visitation begins at 9:00 a.m., with the service at 11:00 a.m., followed by interment at Resthaven Memorial Park.
Connie’s legacy is not found in titles or crowns, but in her words, her laughter, and the spirit of Texas pride she carried with her throughout her 92 remarkable years.
