David “Chip” Woody, Jr. went to be with his Lord on February 24, 2026. Chip was born on July 30, 1973. Just like his firecracker, birth month, little Chip was a bright spark burning with Energizer energy. Curious about everything, he was known to take things apart just to see how they worked, and sometimes those things were put back together and worked like they had before. Parental control for HBO channel was no match for the little dude; he would hack it and reset the password, so his parents couldn’t watch anything rated R. If your ever wondered why his momma is such a little lady, it is probably because she is still burning calories to this day from trying to keep one step ahead of her little sparkplug.
Chip said he started working at Woody Tire Company before the age of eight, patching tubes, emptying trashcans, and pretending to answer phones and write invoices. So, it was no surprise when he started his own business by the age of ten, selling pocketknives to his classmates -- $2.00 per knife, $3.00 if his customer wanted his/her name on it. Selling knives at school?!!? Yes, it was the early eighties, and back in the day, the world was bit more laid back.
Before his sixteenth birthday, Chip bought his famous purple mini truck which he stocked with BIG-thumping speakers. Playing his favorite tunes at eardrum bursting decibels, he drove the “Purple Passion” all over Lubbock looking for pretty girls and fun. He graduated from Monterey High School in 1991 and started at Texas Tech in the fall. Joining the Phi Gamma Delta Fraternity, Chip met the brothers who would become his life-long friends and spent the next four years making memories. Upon his graduation from Tech in 1995, he went to work as the third generation running Woody Tire.
Chip married Melissa in August 1997, and they had two children, Samantha and David Woody, III. An outstanding daddy, Samantha fondly remembers Daddy braiding her hair, going to daddy/daughter dances, and coming to her rescue time and again when her T-Bird “Danny” broke down. David’s favorite memories with dad are fishing, smoking cigars (talking about life), and learning to work on vehicles. When asked, what is one specific thing you will never forget Dad teaching you? David replied with a smile, “How to change out a lower panel control arm in the McDonalds parking lot.”
Up before the sun and often late at night, nobody worked more diligently than Chip Woody. He gave every task 110%, and customer service was always number one. Our hearts ache from his sudden departure, yet we will never forget all the ways he loved and took care of his family, friends, and customers.
He is preceded in death by his grandparents Ralph and Elizabeth Krebbs and Glenn and Odell Woody-Cook, Uncle Pat Donley, and father-in-law James Weaver.
He is survived by: wife Melissa Woody, children Samantha and David Woody, III. father David Woody, Sr. mother Nancy and husband Jack Warlick, sister Kathryn and husband Chad Driskill, and five nieces and nephews.
