David Hardy Stewart

David Hardy Stewart went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, August 27, 2026. Visitation is Tuesday, September 1, from 5:00 - 7:00 pm at Lake Ridge Chapel in Lubbock, Texas (6025 82nd St). A celebration of David’s 81 years will be Wednesday, September 2, at 10:00 am at Monterey Church of Christ in Lubbock, Texas (6111 82nd St).

David was born in Center, Texas on February 9, 1945, to Hardy and Becky Stewart. The oldest of three brothers, he spent his earliest years in Center and Odessa, Texas, and later Albuquerque and Grants, New Mexico. He also lived in Center for a semester with his Mama Covington, who he loved and admired.

During his time as a young man, he could often be found hunting and fishing in the east Texas woods. He spoke often of fishing with his Granddaddy. One of the most significant moments of his life took place when he was only 15 years old. This is when he met Sally Hughes. David and Sally were married in January of 1966 and celebrated 60 years of marriage earlier this year.

David graduated from Lubbock Christian College in 1963 and earned an Associate degree in Psychology. He often acknowledged his time at LCC as one of the most pivotal chapters of his life. He maintained this relationship throughout his life by serving on the LCU board of trustees for 36 years.

In 1967 David and Sally moved to Grants, New Mexico and joined the family business full-time, learning the ins and outs of exploration drilling for uranium. This experience would later prove invaluable for him when he became the President of Stewart Brothers Drilling Company. He served in this role from 1977 to 2006. The family business was blessed under David’s leadership. David was widely known as an expert on exploration and water-well drilling. He was admired and respected by his employees.

David was a pilot and often flew crews between Grants and locations across the southwest. He loved sailing and woodwork. He and Sally loved hiking, camping, and admiring the beauty of God’s creation. They were blessed to travel to places like England, France, Israel, Africa, Australia, and most recently Hawaii for their 60th anniversary. One of their most impressive adventures was an RV tour that began in New Mexico and went all the way to Alaska and back over the course of two months.

It is hard to tell the story of David’s life without mentioning the Grants Church of Christ. David and Sally’s service and ministry to that congregation spanned 58 years. David served for 37 of those years as an elder. David and Sally were introduced to African Christian College in Swaziland during the late 90s.They helped grow and support ACC for more than 25 years. David became a founding board member in 2007 and served in that role for 17 years.

In 2009, David retired from Stewart Brothers. He and Sally added to what was already a notable list of adventures. At the top of that list for both of them was always being outstanding grandparents. They showed up for their grandkids. It didn’t matter if the ball game, birthday party, or graduation was down the street in New Mexico, or hundreds of miles away in West Texas—they were there. They invested in a houseboat on Lake Powell, where they took the family on vacations for more than 20 years.

In 2025, David and Sally moved to Lubbock, joining many other family members, and they quickly began to thrive in their newest roles: great-grandparents.

David is survived by his wife, Sally Stewart; their children, Jonathan Stewart and wife, Cindy, Joel Stewart and wife, Loree, Rebecca Stewart and Leslie Warner; grandchildren, Kaylee Eggleston and husband, Dane, Ashlyn Cavitt and husband, Nathan, Keegan Stewart and wife, Ashton, Amber Stewart, Caleb Horn and wife, Katrina, Kami Ramsey and husband, Kincade, Noah Horn and wife, Faith, and Gideon Horn; great-grandchildren, Brynlee Eggleston, Laney Eggleston, Jamie Horn, Jack Cavitt, Winslow Ramsey, and Cooper Eggleston; and brothers, Steve Stewart and Phillip Stewart.

In honor of David’s life of faith, the family recommends memorial contributions to Lubbock Christian University and African Christian College.
