Delphia was born in Wheeler, Texas on July 1, 1933. Nana was raised by her mother and father, alongside her four sisters and one brother. After high school Nana went onto work in an “M. E. Moses Five and Dime” store in Pampa, Texas.
While working at the Pampa “Five and Dime”, she met Robert Eugene Biggers (Gene). Delphia M. Burns became Delphia M. Biggers when she and Gene married on May 9, 1952. Their marriage, much like their love, remained strong until Gene’s passing, more than 66 years after they said their vows.
Nana worked many jobs, but the one that seemed to make her happiest was working in the cafeterias of two Lubbock schools. Nana worked in the Coronado High School cafeteria and then joined the cafeteria staff of Stewart Elementary. Her grandson Robert attended Stewart, so all of the teachers and students began calling Delphia Nana, and she remained Nana at Stewart elementary until she retired.
Nana had many pleasures in life. She enjoyed meeting with her “TOPS” group on Monday nights, and attending First Baptist Church of Lubbock on Sunday mornings. On any given day you would find Nana indulging in knitting or baking, two of her favorite pastimes. When Nana was not cooking, washing clothes, ironing, or keeping house, she enjoyed watching Pat Sajak host The Wheel of Fortune. One of
Nana’s greatest joys was being with her family, more specifically her great grandchildren.
Nana used to embarrass us by the way she would strike up a conversation with strangers, and now, with her gone, and seeing the distance between people, we can't help but miss the idea of Nana talking to anyone and everyone. We imagine Nana immediately struck up a conversation with the first angel she saw, telling them all about her amazing life, and the family on earth missing her dearly. She also told them the best way to clean heaven and tips and tricks to get wrinkles out of robes.
Delphia Biggers (Nana), was the matriarch of the Biggers family for many years. Her love, impact, and absence will be felt by the Biggers family for generations to come. Nana will be sorely missed, always loved, and never forgotten.
Nana is survived by her sisters: Bobbie Ehmann, Joan Nail, Orna Fay Davis and Peggy Summers; sons: Robert Carl Biggers and Donald Richard Biggers; grandson Robert Paul Biggers and his wife Jessica Biggers, grandson Ethan Biggers, granddaughter Carly Biggers, five greatgrandchildren, and other family and countless friends.
Nana is preceded in death by her parents Albert Burns and Lucille Burns; her husband Robert Eugene Biggers; and followed in death by her brother Dale Burns.
