Don O. Byers

Donald Odell Byers was born on Wednesday, January 31, 1940, in Slaton, Texas to William Odell Byers and Clara Estelle Glasscock Byers. Along with his parents, his older brother Ronny Eugene Byers preceded him in death.

Don attended various schools in West Texas, graduating from Roosevelt High School in 1958. Don passed peacefully to his eternal reward on Wednesday, July 22, 2026.

On Friday, June 17, 1977, Don would marry Sherry Lynn Holloman Haley … his “Pretty Lady.” To this union they would bring their children Greg, Rhonda, Hutch, Lyndee, and Paul, and from that date launch a lifetime of service to others under the framework of their always being room for one more. You would be hard-pressed to find a better example of selflessness than the one this pairing provided.

Don and Sherry were faithful active members wherever they called home at the time, the Northside church of Christ, the Heart-to-Heart Outreach, and the South Plains church of Christ. At South Plains they taught the 2-year-old class for several years and took great pleasure in watching these little people grow up to be God fearing adults and parents themselves. Life brings unexpected instances where one’s faith is challenged. This truth became their reality on Tuesday, November 7, 2000, when Lyndee passed away unexpectedly. But that grief over Lyndee’s passing was best demonstrated in the efforts they put forth as they assisted others in providing meals to families who were also dealing with the loss of a loved one.

Don and Sherry’s home was always warm and inviting. Many of you experienced this firsthand as you arrived on their front porch and were welcomed in with the “get in this house” that often followed. Whether it was for a meal, to stay a few days … or in some cases, for a few years, people knew they were both loved and cared for. Most of the live ins felt as if they had joined their family. One in particular, Caron McMillian, is considered an adopted daughter.

On Friday, April 24th this couple began their transformation, when Sherry passed in the early morning hours. Don remarked that while he would certainly miss her, he was exceedingly comfortable with her passing. “She’ll not wake up another day in that confused body.”

Don is survived by his daughters Rhonda Pool and her husband Keith, Caron McMillian and her husband Gary; sons Greg Byers and his wife Janet, Hutch Haley and his wife Terri, Dan Harrell surviving spouse of Lyndee, and Paul Haley and his wife Cobey. He also survived by 18 grandchildren: Heather, Myndee, Haley, Katie Beth, Devin, Hanna, Holly, Kyler, Hunter, Garrett, Hattie, Allison, Eliza, Sidney, Hudson, Susanna, Eva, and Britta. Don and Sherry were blessed by 28 great-grandchildren. It will be this group, along with those they come in contact with, to carry on Don’s, Daddy’s, and Grampa Don’s charge to be intentional in “Making Today a Good Day!’ So to borrow Daddy’s own words, the family is exceedingly comfortable with what has taken place. He will not wake up another morning in that worn out physical temple … one that “the warranty had expired on a long time ago.”
