Don was born in Little Rock, Arkansas on April 12th 1935 to Richard and Zadie Conder. He attended Little Rock High School where he excelled in track, winning numerous state titles. He was inducted into the Arkansas Track and Field Hall of Fame in 2009.
After high school Don attended Abilene Christian College where he received his B.S. degree in 1956. He was a member of the ACC track team from 1952 to 1956 and ran on a number of championship winning relay teams, tying the world record as a member of the 880 relay team at the California Relays in 1956. Don’s best memories of this time in his life were of his coach Oliver Jackson and his teammates, many who became lifelong friends. He was inducted into the ACU Sports Hall of Fame in 2005.
More importantly during this time he met an ACC freshmen girl from Lubbock, Texas. Don and Sue Hufstedler were married in September 1956 and enjoyed over 61 years together raising four boys. Don worked at Shell Oil Company, LCC, E.K. Hufstedler Tractor Store and over 20 years as the Business Manager at the Lubock State School. After retirement he enjoyed playing golf and officiating track meets for many years. Don and Sue were members of Broadway Church of Christ, where he was an elder, Granbury Church of Christ and most recently Greenlawn Church of Christ. Don always cared about young people and encouraging them. He enjoyed attending a wide range of activities and sporting events of many young people from church and other places.
‘Daddy Don’ loved his family the most; his wife, four sons, three daughter-in-laws and five grandchildren and their spouses. They enjoyed a number of great family trips together: skiing in Colorado, 2 Olympics, a 50th anniversary trip to Alaska, Hawaii and many others. He loved a good chicken fried steak, lemon icebox pie, chocolate and biscuits, Dairy Queen blizzards and any all-you-can-eat buffets. He was an avid golfer who made some extraordinary “pars” throughout his life. He was dearly loved by all of his family.
A visitation with the family will be held Saturday February 3rd from 1:30 to 3:30 at the Greenlawn Church of Christ in the foyer. Instead of flowers, memorial gifts are requested to Children’s Home of Lubbock, Lubbock Christian Schools or Abilene Christian University.
The family would also like to express our appreciation to the staff at Lubbock Heart Hospital, in particular the nurses and physical therapy group.
