Celebration of life services will be Monday, Dec. 27th, 2:30 pm, at Westmont Christian Church with Reverend Clint Stephenson officiating. Graveside services will follow at Resthaven Memorial Park.
During Don’s fight through illness, he was surrounded by his loving wife and family. He was a caring, generous, and loving husband, father, brother, and very special DeeDa.
Don was born Nov. 17th, 1938, in Wellington, TX to Floyd R. and Margaret Hood. Before graduating in 1957 from WHS, Don played football for the fighting Skyrockets and was a Golden Gloves boxing titlist. Don served as a sergeant and paratrooper in the U.S. Army where he also trained in radiology and medical technology. He was honored for his military service with a brick bearing his name at the Lubbock War Memorial.
Don graduated from Texas Technological College in 1965 with a Bachelor of Science degree in microbiology. He worked his way through college as a medical technologist for Methodist Hospital. Subsequently, he was a medical laboratory director/owner for many years. Don was also an inventor and avid motorcyclist. In the early 1960’s he developed a blood, cross-matching system that is still in use today. Later, he invented a unique motorcycle bag called the “Lazy Rider”, marketed around the world.
He is survived by his devoted wife, Elizabeth (Hurst), of 52 years, a son, Marc Hood and wife Dahlia of Lubbock, a daughter, Caron and husband Dan Skarke of League City, TX, six grandchildren, Dustin Nelson and wife Shannon, Nicole Hood, Sarah, Matthew, Erin, and Michael Skarke, as well as special nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers Floyd M., Odie, and Darrell.
The family wishes to express their heart-felt gratitude for all the support and prayers of friends and our Westmont Christian Church family. Special appreciation Heritage Oaks Rehabilitation as well as Covenant Medical Center ER, telemetry, and MICU doctors, nurses, and staff.
The family will receive friends and loved ones at the Resthaven Funeral Home from 2 to 4 pm, Sunday, Dec. 26th.
Memorials may be made to Westmont Christian Church, Women’s Protective Services, or Boys Ranch.
