Doris Stephens

Doris was born on September 15, 1927, in Lamesa, Texas, to Jeff Shipp and Della (Echols) Shipp. The family moved to the Los Angeles area during the

Depression years to find work. Doris attended schools in Rosemead, California and graduated from El Monte High School in 1945. She worked at a defense plant during high school as one of the famed Rosie the Riveters.

Following high school, she met Dick Stephens after he returned from serving in the Navy, and they were married in August of 1946. Their first born daughter, Paula, was born in Marysville, California in 1947 and soon after, the family returned to Lamesa. Their second daughter, Linda, was born there in 1949. Doris was a talented seamstress and enjoyed making matching dresses for her girls. She did not join the work force until her daughters were in elementary school. In 1955, she worked with Dorothy McGuire in her drapery shop. After several years in that job, she was hired as a designer for Dotty Dan. She continued there until 1978, when she became a buyer for Collins Department Store.

Doris was active as a member of First Baptist Church, teaching Sunday School, and participating in WMU. She was also a member of the Garden Club. In 2004, she and Dick moved to Lubbock, where she joined Indiana Avenue Baptist Church. Doris was preceded in death by her parents, and husband, Dick,

who passed away on December 25, 2016, after 70 years of marriage.

She is survived by her children; Paula and husband, Wallace Franklin of Trophy Club, Texas, and Linda and husband, Jimmy Young of Lubbock, and three grandchildren, Jeff Young and wife, Shanda, of El Paso, Robyn Neuhoff and husband, Brian of Dallas, and Michael Young of Austin. She is also survived by two great-grandchildren, Madelyn Neuhoff, and Carson Young.
