Dr. Tyler was born February 2, 1954, in Hobbs, NM, to parents Joyce (Mann) and Donald R. Tyler. He was raised partially in Dallas, TX and on the farm and ranch owned by L.E. Steele near Lovington, NM, where his grandparents, John F. and Ellie Mann lived and worked. Moving permanently to Dallas while in the fifth grade, he met many lifelong friends and graduated from Hillcrest High School in 1972. He graduated from Texas Tech University with a B.S. in Microbiology in 1977. David chose a career in osteopathic medicine after working in college at the Lubbock Osteopathic Hospital. He graduated from the only medical school he applied to: the Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine, in 1981, with a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine Degree, Cum Laude. He completed a rotating internship at Grand Prairie Community Hospital in 1982, receiving two outstanding intern awards: one from the medical staff and the other from the nursing staff.
During his medical student and intern years, David took extra rotations in obstetrics, preparing himself for practicing family medicine with emphasis on obstetrics and pediatric medicine. He joined the partnerships of Drs. Mann, Wright, Maul, and Tyler in 1982 and practiced all phases of family medicine until being disabled by illness in May of 2000.
During his career, he was priviledged to deliver 2000 newborns, mostly in the Lubbock area. He practiced at Community Hospital of Lubbock, Highland Hospital, and Lubbock General / University Medical Center, and was associated as a clinical instructor with the Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine and Texas Tech Health Sciences Center. He was certified in family medicine by the American Osteopathic Board of Family Practice.
David was a member of Broadview Baptist Church of Lubbock. At age 13, while attending Lakewood Baptist Church in Dallas, TX, he surrendered to his Savior Jesus Christ. He was proud of having served for several years as an adult Sunday School teacher at Broadview.
He was also a lifelong member of the Sons of Confederate Veterans, the American Osteopathic Association, the Texas Osteopathic Association, and the Texas Tech Alumni Association.
