Dwain Ed Kuhler, 80, of Lubbock, Texas passed away January 15, 2020. He was born in Littlefield, Texas on July 3, 1939 to E.J. and Hilda Kuhler. Dwain graduated from Pep High School in Pep, Texas in May of 1958 and received an Associates of Arts Degree from South Plains College in Levelland, Texas in May of 1971.
He was married to Brenda Gwyn Baxley on July 18th, 1970 in Lubbock, Texas. The couple resided on the family homestead in Cochran County for thirty-five years later moving to Lubbock to be closer to grandchildren.
Dwain’s passion was farming and he enjoyed all aspects of agricultural work. His passion led to expansion of the farming responsibilities for his family with land across four counties. He spoke before Congress in support of regulation reform and improvements to the expansion of the omnibus Agriculture and Food Act of 1981. Dwain believed that no day started too early and no job was to be left for tomorrow. He would start before sunrise and often work late into the night to finish a year’s harvest. He spent his later years studying improved dry-land farming practices and focused on soil conservation. To supplement his passion, he held several other jobs including pipe fitter, rancher and later in life retired from the Texas Department of Corrections (TDJC) as a Corrections Peace Officer in the Plainview and Brownfield correctional units.
He was 3rd degree Knight in the Knights of Columbus Catholic Fraternal Organization, lifetime member of the National Rifle Association, and a lifelong Republican. Dwain was also an auto enthusiast and spent his off hours in retirement restoring a 1982 El Camino. Dwain’s primary focus was always his family and he enjoyed every moment spent by a pool or beach while travelling with his wife to various destinations in Hawaii, the Caribbean and Mexico.
Dwain is survived by a daughter, Kathy and husband Donovan Kauffman of Lubbock, son Paul and wife Trisha Kuhler of Frisco, daughter Tina and husband Mark Belcher of Lubbock, grandchildren Maddie and Bobby Eby of Dallas, JC Belcher, Jayden Kauffman, and Cooper Belcher all of Lubbock, along with two sisters (Janie and Brenda) and three brothers (Marvin, Ron and Randy). He was preceded in death by his father and mother and one brother (Dennis).
Visitation with the family will be 6-8 PM on Thursday January 23, 2020 at Resthaven Funeral home 5740 West, 19th St, Lubbock, TX 79407 with a Catholic Rosary at 7 PM in the Resthaven Chapel.
