Eugene graduated from Anson High School in 1963 and later earned a bachelor’s degree from Texas Tech University. He dedicated his career to teaching and coaching, serving students in Merkel, Rotan, Crosbyton, Bovina, Sundown, Anson, and Hawley. He spent the longest part of his career with Sundown ISD. For Eugene, the work was about more than lessons and games; it was about the students and teachers he saw each day.
Eugene married Joyce Thomas on June 12, 1964, in Anson. Together, they built a life centered on family, faith and raised their two children, Rocky and Ronda. During their first ten years of marriage, his coaching career took them from one community to another. They eventually made their home in Sundown for 20 years before moving to Abilene, where they lived for 30 years. Eugene and Joyce joined Ft. Phantom Baptist Church in 1998, and he served as a deacon for many years.
Eugene found joy in the things that kept his hands and mind busy: working on lawn mowers, flying model airplanes, collecting cars, and tinkering in his shop. He was just as willing to use his time to help someone in need. When he slowed down, he enjoyed watching sports and Westerns, but he especially loved spending time with his family. He delighted in entertaining them with his witty songs and sayings, giving them laughter and memories they will carry with them.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Bussie and Joy Boaz.
Eugene leaves behind his wife, Joyce; his son, Rocky Boaz and wife Kimberly of Wolfforth; and his daughter, Ronda Hoes and husband Jay of Lubbock. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Ashley Herrera and husband Larry of Lubbock, Kaley Boaz-Fluitt and husband Tyler of Austin, Chelsea Boaz-Pyles and husband Tyler of Ruston, Louisiana, Tristan Hoes and wife Karley of Lubbock, and Cailyn Hoes of Lubbock; and his great-granddaughters, Avery and Kinsley.
Eugene’s family will remember the years they shared with him, the many places they called home together, and the love he gave them throughout his life.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, September 29, at Resthaven Funeral Home. Visitation will take place that day from noon until 2:00 p.m. Final resting place will be Resthaven Cemetery.
